I am only here for five more days.

We get off the phone. Before I turn off my phone I pull up my “favorite” contacts and my finger hovers over Sandy’s name. It would be so easy to get up and leave and never have to look back…

So that’s what I do. More slowly than before. With my suitcase packed I head downstairs planning to call her outside. My breath jumps when I see that Chasen is standing there, as if waiting for me.

He looks at my suitcase, and the hurt becomes evident all over his features. “No.”

I half shrug. “I’m sorry, Chasen.” Where are Hank and Marjorie now, I wonder?

“Don’t leave right now, not like this, please, Hazel? At least stay for the summer festival? It’s in two days,” he says looking hopeful and disheartened in equal measure. Does this man even realize the power he has over me? I have no defense against that face, that voice.

“I didn’t know there was a festival.”

Chasen gives a halfhearted laugh. A half-injured kind of sound. “It’s a small farm town, angel. There’s always a festival.”
