Turning to Hazel, I fish the little velvet box out of my denim trousers and slowly lower onto one knee.

“You were serious?” Hazel gasps.

“Unless you think I’m out of my mind. In which case”—I crack a smirk—“you would be right.”

“Yes.”

“I reckoned so,” I shrug.

“No.” Hazel shakes her head at me, her smile brightening her face. “That’s not what I meant.” She casts her eyes down at the ring and then at me. “Yes,” she says again.

She’s as crazy as I am.

“I love you, Hazel. I know it’s fast and it’s madness but when you know, shit, you just know.”

Hazel nods at me in understanding, her eyes shimmering pools of tears. She looks up at her dad. Hank says, “It was that way with Marjorie and me. We saw each other, and we just knew. We fell in love and keep falling in love every day.”

“Is that your official blessing?” Hazel says.

“Ah, that ain’t up to me.” He pulls her in for another quick hug, planting a kiss on top of her head. “You need to call your dad,” he says, and turns to leave.

“He’s going to adore you,” Hazel tells me.

“Really?” I ask. I ain’t convinced.

“Well…yeah. Eventually.”

I chuckle. “What do ya say we get this ring on that little finger of yours already, so I can get up off my knees?”

“Yes.” Hazel reaches out her hand. I take it in mine. The ring slides up her finger and fits right into place. “It’s gorgeous, Chasen,” Hazel beams. “I love you.”

“I love you, angel. Future wife.” Standing up, I draw her to me. “I love you so much.”
