“Compared to Seattle?” Liz cuts in. “I can take a guess.” She giggles.

“Your dad…uh, Scott Davenport,” Chasen clarifies, “he’s a lawyer too, right?”

“Yeah.” I shrug.

“Following in his footsteps?”

“Kinda. I have always been sort of a daddy’s girl.” Oh…my god. Did I really just say that…out loud…here? The un-thought-out words hang heavily over the dinner table for a whole eternity.

From the corner of my eye I see Hank—who by the way, Tess was right, is really quite handsome for an older man—and he actually appears…hurt.

That is so unfair. He hasn’t exactly been hospitable thus far…and now he’s gotten his feelings hurt? No.

Just no.

I put down my napkin. “May I please be excused?” I ask Marjorie.

“Oh, sure, honey.”

“I’m just going to go for a walk.” I push my chair back from the table, not looking back as I head for the door. I’m too embarrassed. Too sad. Too much missing my family.
