Dax shrugged. “You’re avoiding my question.”

“Fine.”

“Okay.” He turned on his heel and headed back toward the horse he had been tending to. “I’m going to get back to work. You’re welcome to run your yearling through some exercises, then call it a day.”

She bit back an argument that sat on the tip of her tongue. He’d flipped this whole conversation around, surprising her, keeping her on her toes. She couldn’t deny how exhilarating it had all been, and she found herself looking forward to whatever he had in mind for their date.

Sarah saton the edge of her bed. Today had been taxing but fulfilling all the same. From the emotional rollercoaster to the energy-zapping labor she had to complete, she wouldn’t be surprised if she fell asleep the moment her head hit the pillow.

Her feet bounced against the wooden floorboards as she waited for Brielle. Her roommate hadn’t come to get ready for bed yet, and she didn’t know how she was going to broach the subject of an official date with Dax.

The way those two acted around one another—man, she should have discussed that with Dax before. She’d been so thrown that she hadn’t even thought about it. Obviously, Dax wasn’t concerned or he would have brought it up. Even still, Sarah knew she had to discuss it before the actual date.

She wrung her hands together. Guilt had started to grow like a wildfire, spreading to the most vulnerable parts of her. If Brielle wasn’t pleased, Sarah had no intention of backing out. She wanted to go on a date with Dax. Even she wasn’t so blind to see that he was good for her. He’d pushed her to do things she wouldn’t have otherwise attempted. He made her feel better about her situation, almost like he’d helped her give herself permission for forgiveness.

Dax made her happy.

The bedroom door opened and Sarah’s head snapped up. Brielle smiled at her and tossed her hat on the dresser near the door. “Hey. How was your day?”

Sarah pulled up her legs beneath her, folding them and turning to face Brielle’s bed. “It was good.” The last word hung in the air, noticeably different than the rest of the sentence. Sarah grimaced. Why was it so much harder to brush off what made her nervous around Brielle?

Brielle paused what she was doing and glanced over her shoulder. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing.”

Brielle snorted, pulling out her pajamas from her drawer. “Something is definitely up. What happened today?” She moved to her bed and sat on the edge. “I know you might not realize it, but you can tell me anything. I promise. I’m here for you.”

Her words were likely due to the guilt she still harbored over the argument they’d had right before her accident. It didn’t matter that Sarah had told her all was forgiven. Brielle still seemed to step lightly around the subject, never directly discussing it.

Sarah pursed her lips together and pulled them to the side. “Can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“You and Dax…”

Brielle tilted her head to the side, “What about me and Dax?” She didn’t appear to be apprehensive at all. It was almost like her small smile was one that said she already had a feeling about where this conversation was going.

“You two were involved.”

“Yes.”

“Do you still have feelings for him?”

Time dragged on as Brielle considered her. The longer she waited before she answered, the more anxious Sarah became. “Sure.”

Sarah’s heart stuttered, tripping over itself. “You do?”

“Yeah, but not in the way you’re probably thinking.”

Brows furrowing, Sarah moved closer to the edge, letting her legs dangle over the side. “There aren’t many ways I can take that statement.”

Brielle’s smile stretched over her whole face. “I care about Dax like anyone would care about their ex when things ended on good terms. If he wanted to get back together and have some fun, would I be up for it? Absolutely. Do I want something serious right now? Nope. Why? Did he say something?”

She frowned. “You could say that.”

“Somethingbad?”
