I lower my gaze and my skin must be flushed because I feel hot and nervous at how eerily calm Lane is when he threatens Patrick because I know Lane would cash in on it. You can feel it in his tone and so does Patrick as he quickly steps away but he never glances in my direction again, heeding Lane’s warning. I have never thought Lane would be capable of violence but the way he threatened Patrick was laced with promise, not caring about the outcome.

He must notice my unease because Lane’s eyes soften. “I’m sorry to have frightened you. You don’t ever have to worry about me hurting you. I would die before I would hurt you, and I will never allow anyone to disrespect you or make you feel uncomfortable.”

He signals the waiter and respectfully cancels the order and pays the tab. He called me his girl and I feel excited about the label and confused all at the same time. He takes my hand and guides me outside of the restaurant and he kisses the side of my head affectionately.

“How about a burger?” He asks.

My eyes light up at the prospect of a good ole burger. “That would be perfect,” I answer with a grin.

Chapter twenty-five

Aura

We make it back home and when we enter the hallway, there is a charge in the air. Like a short circuit and sparks are flying everywhere when he stops in front of my bedroom door. I turn and my hair frames my face.

When I make a move to move it out of the way, Lane intercepts my hands beating me to it and places the loose stands behind both my ears. He grins and my insides flutter. My legs squeeze together with a hot, all-consuming need. A need to finally connect and experience something earth shattering.

He leans close and captures my lips like he did the first time, and I wrap my hands around his neck and deepen the kiss. The kiss feels like it goes on forever. We taste and explore each other in a rhythm that courses through me like a mantra. My thoughts travel to Kalum unexpectedly, but I quickly block it out, feeling guilty because Lane deserves my full attention and my love. He is my savior and my friend.

He pulls back from the kiss, and he is panting. My hands slide up his chest feeling the ripples of his hard lean muscles under my fingers and stop over his heart. It beats wildly. He angles his head and watches me as I explore the feel of his body down to the waistband of his jeans. He takes in a sharp breath and his eyes darken full of want and need.

“Take me to your room, Lane.”

He places his hand over mine. “You don’t have to, Aura. If you’re not ready…” He trails off.

My gaze lands on his while my fingers entwine with his rough ones. “I’m ready and I want you, Lane. I want to be honest and if you don’t want—”

“I know,” he interrupts. His finger slides the thin strap of my dress down my shoulder and the tiny hairs on my arms stand up like an electric current. “Are you sure you want it to be me?”

My lips kiss his fingers that he has on my shoulders. “I wouldn’t want it to be anyone else but you.”

He shudders and takes my hand, guiding me into his bedroom until we stand on the foot of his made bed. He doesn’t need to hire anyone, and he refuses to help me clean the house.

He makes sure they come every other day to clean. His bed is fluffy with a white comforter that looks like a cloud in heaven. He removes his sweater and the ripples of his muscles contract over taught skin and he is mouth-wateringly hot. The deep V peeks out of the waistband of his jeans, itching for me to run my fingers over the lines. I remove my shoes and pull my dress over my head; I’m left with only my lace bra and thong.

His eyes scroll over my body and he whispers, “Beautiful.”

He removes his jeans, and he is clad in only his boxer briefs. His erection is huge and there is a wet spot on his boxers the top. My teeth trap my lower lip, wondering how he would taste. He expertly removes my bra with ease, and it slides off my arms.

“You are the most beautiful girl I have ever laid my eyes on. Inside and out, you are perfect.”

No one has ever said I was perfect before. In his eyes, he sees me as perfect but there are times, I feel weak but with Lane he always manages to say the right thing.

“Thank you,” is all I manage to say because his words have me melting and I can’t help that I’m falling in love with him.

I never thought after Kalum I would ever fall for another. I thought I loved Marcus but Kalum brought out feelings inside me that could never compare. When I would cry at night, Kalum was there holding me. His kisses seared my soul and what I thought I could have with him was just an illusion I desperately wanted to be real hoping for the day he would decide to make me his.

I honestly thought for moment I was but reality caught up and showed me what was true and what was a lie. The truth, I’m homeless with nothing and no one and I don’t belong in Kalum’s world. The lie, the thought that we could be together and that he loved me. This man looks at me like I am his world and poor heart is broken but I hope he could be the glue to keep me going.

Hope is all I have left because without it, I’m truly lost. Lane is the only person that has cared for me when I had no one. He treats me like I’m fragile glass, but he looks at me like I’m his rock. Like I’m the most important person in his life and if he only knew right now and, in this moment, he is the most important person in mine.

I lie down on the bed, and he kisses my nose, my eyes, my jaw, and my neck.

I arch my back, seeking his lips all over my skin. His tongue makes a trail down to my breasts and sucks each one until I’m left panting and writhing under him.

“Lane,” I say breathlessly.

“Aura, I want to be inside of you.”
