Page 55 of Until Her

Lane flinches like I just delivered a massive blow.

“Who is he?” Lane questions.

“Someone making sure the almost six-month pregnant girl gets home safe. You know, because the guy that knocked her up gives two shits about her now that she is an inconvenience,” I retort.

“Go back to your precious garage and leave me alone. I have nothing to say to you. I don’t want to see you. If you want a picture of your son, you let me know where to send it, but that’s all we have to talk about.”

He calms down and walks up to me. “We’re having a son?”

His eyes water, and a lone tear escapes his eye.

“Yes.”

My heart clenches at the expression in his face but I shake it off. He left me. He left us. I found out it was a boy this past Monday but I hadn’t shared it with anyone. My head tilts to see Nick still standing on the sidewall, silent, watching Lane.

“You’re Lane Turner. The man that is rumored to have help build the fastest car in the world. You’re like the Michael Jordan of the car world,” Nick says in bewilderment.

Lane rolls his eyes. “Do you mind? I’m trying to fix things with my girl, and your kind of ruining it.”

I ignore Nick and is recognition of who my boyfriend is. I have never told anyone in the diner or Nick who my boyfriend was. Lane has made a name for himself working on supercars with major manufacturers in the car world. People come to him to modify their cars to make them faster.

“Where were you?” I ask Lane.

“Taking care of things. A lot of things.”

“You couldn’t tell me where you were or answered your phone when I called,” I shake my head and tears slide down my cheeks. “You couldn’t call or say, ‘hey I know we’re pregnant, but give me some time’ or ‘hey I want you to leave, Aura, get out.’”

“I know. I’m sorry. I don’t want you to leave me but I need you to get in that car so I can explain.”

“No. You don’t get to do that. You had your chance,” I say in a hard tone.

I turn and begin to walk away.

“Aura, don’t.”

“Stay with your precious cars, Lane. Build another one for all I care. You don’t need a baby to cause you pressure, and from what I can tell you don’t need me.”

“I’m not leaving you, and you are not leaving me. Wherever I go, you go. Remember?”

“Where you went, I wasn’t invited. So, there’s that. You left me,” I snap.

Lane pinches his nose. “I didn’t leave you. I would never leave you. I already told you I had to take care of something,” he says through clenched teeth.

Is he insane? I think he has inhaled too much carbon monoxide. He thinks that is all he has to say and I’m going to go running back to him.

“Is everything okay, Aura?” Nick chimes in.

I totally forgot he was still standing there when I was about to walk away.

“Leave!” Lane roars as he marches over to him with his fist clenched.

Nick’s eyes widen at the look of rage across Lane’s expression. “O-okay. I’ll go,” Nick stammers and he takes off in the opposite direction.

“You didn’t have to do that,” I scold Lane.

“No other man comes near you until the day I die. Do you understand? No other man.”

“It's a little too late for that. You hurt me when you left. I’m sorry, but I can’t go back. We are over.”
