“Is it just sex? Or like a proper date?”

I eyed Bruno. For a burly bouncer who could easily bench press me with one hand, he had a soft streak. That grizzly exterior only made the squishy bits more charming. Once you got to know him, the scary persona he exuded while working the door melted away. If only our handsome bouncer played for my team.

“An actual date? I think. Maybe. I’m not sure.”

“Oh. Sounds like they’re polyamorous. Could be a good situation for you.”

Poly-ama-what? Bruno dropped the information like every human being on the planet knew the definition. I cycled through my education as a gay man, and nowhere had that term popped up. My raised eyebrow or lack of quip made him laugh.

“It means they’re open to dating more than each other. Think of it like an open relationship with feelings.”

My experiences with open relationships had been questionable in the past. It should be the ideal situation, sex, and then they head home. But the idea of dating a man who would go home to his partner? That seemed almost greedy.

“Wait—” I threw the towel over my shoulder. “So they are married, but they date other people? Doesn’t that screw over the new guy? What if things got serious?”

“Alejandro, I wouldn’t have taken you for such a traditional definition of marriage. Who says you can’t have two partners? Back in college, I dated a couple for a while. Luca and Brianne. It was pretty awesome. We got along great, and always felt like there was somebody around when I needed them.”

“Luca? Bruno, did you just admit to having a gay relationship?”

He laughed. “Are you calling me a prude? Luca and I never really played alone. But I didn’t mind having another guy in bed with Brianne there.”

“What if I had no interest in his husband?”

“Did the husband ask you out on a date?”

“Well…” I tried to think if the husband had given me any signals that he was interested. “I guess not.”

“Get out of your head. Call the guy and enjoy a date. It’s not like you’re moving in.”

It all seemed very complicated, and that was before making the phone call. I didn’t like dealing with complications. I was probably the least complicated guy with sex, but this? Sharing a guy? I didn’t know about that. That threw up a thousand red flags and at the end of the experience, I’d be heartbroken and alone.

“Maybe…” It was a lie, but I didn’t want Bruno to know that.

“I should give Brianne a call and see what they’re up to these days.”

I shook my head. “A Bruno sandwich.” I laughed. “That’s not a bad image.” I gave the man a wink and returned to cleaning down the beer taps. I didn’t have to worry about calling EO tonight. Despite the hero’s willingness to save me from being snake food, I wasn’t convinced I needed that kind of complication in my life.

“This isn’t the right way.”

“The road is washed out,” the cab driver responded.

“You can take the overpass.”

“This way is faster,” he said.

I hated when people told me how to pour drinks, so I sat back and let the taxi driver do his job. I was certain I was right, but he would not have it. If it hadn’t been pouring, I’d have told him to pull over, and I’d walk home. I hated being wet, and the moment it reached my socks I’d be miserable.

My phone vibrated.

Sir Awesome: You free tonight? Have somethingawesometo show you.

It vibrated again before I could reply.

Dark Star: Want to come by the Lunar Base?

My phone hadn’t stopped buzzing for the last half hour. The heroes of Vanguard prepared to hang their capes up for the night. Once off the job, they were eagerly hoping I’d help them slide out of their spandex tights and slide into, well, me. But as much as I wanted some uncomplicated fun, I couldn’t help but keep thinking about what Bruno said.
