“Can’t say I’ve been asked that before.”

“I might get a call from him to evac. Just in case I have to dash off.” He took my hand, running his thumb over my knuckles. “Still weird, isn’t it?”

“A little.”

He raised my hand, kissing it. “I appreciate the effort.”

“Want to walk back to my place?” Stupid question asking a man who could bend space-time. “I’ve been on my feet all night, and I desperately need to put them up.”

Two portals opened on either side of him. I seem to remember a similar trick. He definitely knew how to bring the wow factor to a casual evening.

“There’s no way you can beat sunrise in Paris. Where does this one lead?”

“Do you trust me?”

Through one portal, I could see my couch, my incredibly soft and comfortable couch. I could almost hear it calling my name, summoning me to sit down and let it hold me in a warm hug. I couldn’t make out the destination on the other. It could have been anywhere on the planet. If I were alone, I’d have opted for my living room, but with the boyish smile on his face, eager to show me another exotic location, I couldn’t resist.

“I trust you.” I meant it.

“Quick warning. Portals going this far can make you a little dizzy.”

Before I could ask questions, he pulled me through. We were on the other side in an instant, but my insides took a second to catch up. I staggered and Theo caught me, holding me tight as I fought my way through the nausea.

“Dios mío.” With a deep breath, the world solidified under my feet. “Where did you take us? Australia?”

“A little further.”

“Where on Earth…”

We were standing in a grassy field, except what should have been a lush green blanket on the ground was a vibrant purple. Even the sky held a tinge of purple and magenta. Wherever we were, it was night. There were hills in the distance, just short of being mountains. There were no animals, no real sounds other than a gentle breeze.

I gasped as a series of streaks appeared high above, speeding through the veil of darkness. Dozens more followed as a meteor storm filled the sky. As I followed their path, I barely had words to describe it. Hanging in the sky was a vast, amorphous blob of colors. Somewhere out in space, I was watching a celestial event unfold.

“This isn’t Earth,” I whispered.

“This isn’t even the Milky Way.”

“What is it?”

“You’re watching a star be born.”

“A sun?”

“The planet has two,” he explained. “Someday, it’ll have a third.”

“So much better than Paris,” I mumbled.

It was one thing to see my sun from a new location. High above Paris had been stunning. While the city felt claustrophobic, wherever he had brought me felt as if it were… I couldn’t wrap my head around it. Itwasa different world.

“Theo,” I turned back to him. While I had been taking in the sky, he had been watching me. “It’s beautiful.” I kissed the man. As I held the sides of his face, it came with the realization that I had kissed a superhero on a distant planet underneath an event that almost no human on Earth would ever witness. Cinnamon and shooting stars.

“You’re going to need to up your game for our next date.”

There was a pause to his usual quip. “So there’s going to be a next date?” The bravado slipped from his voice. I studied his face and could see the vulnerability creeping in as he broke eye contact. Heroes could save the world without hesitation, but for something as simple as a date, they carried the same insecurities as the rest of us.

I took his hand and spun myself, so it was draped over my shoulders. Pulling him tight, I assured him this wouldn’t be our last date. “I’m pretty sure there’s another date in our future. Why would you think otherwise?”

“It’s not exactly a conventional situation.”
