I hang my head down, feeling ashamed of myself, “He kissed me.”

His mouth on mine was all I could even think about.

“Okay. Well, most people kiss. Just tell him to not do it again.”

If only it were so simple. “He doesn’t listen. He won’t listen but there’s a bigger problem.” I shake my head in disgust with myself.

She stares at me, listening intently.

I cross my arms while sighing audibly, “I liked it, Scarlet. A lot. He scares me. I just can’t risk this.”

She gasped in shock, “I’ve been there with a Martin man. If he’s anything like Alexander, you cannot fight it.”

God knows I’ve tried.

“Let’s get back before April asks questions.”

I don’t want to answer more questions about this than I have to.

Scarlet laughs as we head back to the table.

The server comes with a tray of tequila shots, April’s doing, I’m sure. I’m sitting between April and Scarlet, two ridiculously happy women. Scarlet is engaged to Alexander, who has saved her from her monster of an ex. April is now dating Paul, my doctor friend. Everyone is madly in love except for me, or so it seems. No thank you.

Scarlet looks over at me. She whispers, “You’re next.”

There is nothing I want less.Laughing I said, “No way. Not interested.” I will never allow that to happen.

“Neither was I.”

Well, that is true. She was barely out of a marriage when she met Alexander. I know she didn’t go looking for it. I’m not just not looking for it but I’m avoiding it. Not just avoiding it, I will not allow it.

I’m talking to April and Scarlet about my newest book to hit the shelves. It’s currently in the number one spot. However, as I am discussing it with them, I notice Jamie staring at me like he’s on death row and I’m his chosen last meal.

His eyes are so striking.

The heated gaze directed at me makes me wet. Somehow I know he plans to make staying away from him very difficult.

“Does he stare at everyone like that?” It really makes me feel naked emotionally. As if he can see everything I feel.

I wonder if he can tell from where he’s sitting that my body is reacting to his seductive stare.

“No. I’ve never seen him do that. He hasn’t taken his eyes off of you.”

“I’m going to go. I have an early day tomorrow, and he makes me uncomfortable. Let’s do this again soon though,” I say. I have to get out of here. I can’t take it anymore.

Scarlet smiles and whispers, “Twenty bucks says he follows you.”

I say my goodbyes and am pleasant. I hug everyone but Jamie. He keeps his eyes locked on my body.

“Paul, call me tomorrow if you would,” I smile. I need to talk to my friend. He can help me understand this. I grab my purse and walk back towards the elevator. I have to get him out of my system. Just forget about him.

Walking into the elevator, I’m in my own world and unaware someone has gotten in with me until he’s in front of me. I gasped in shock. Scarlet called it. “Jamie.”No Stella. Don’t even think about it.

“Stella.”

Why does him saying my name do this to my body?

My heart rate speeds up. He comes close enough to kiss and puts a hand against the wall on each side of my head, blocking me in. He whispers in my ear, “Stella, you’re so beautiful. Come to my room.”
