“Let me rephrase.” Bethany says, “You didn’t have sex with him?”

I roll my eyes at this line of questioning.

I glance at April, “How are things with the doctor?”

She blushes, “Amazing.”

Everyone talks about work. April is a hotshot lawyer, Scarlet is in advertising, Holly is a Nurse, Bethany and I are the only ones that work in the literary world.

Scarlet said, “Everybody has a man now.”

Everyone stares at her. Poor Holly looks sad. She doesn’t have a man. Her last man, if you want to call him a man, beat the shit out of her. She’s beautiful inside and out, although she tries to hide it. She deserves better than what she accepts for herself. I’m relieved that she finally broke up with the cop with an anger problem.

“Stella is in a hot relationship with Jamie.”

All eyes are on me.

“It’s nothing, really. It’s just sex. We are not in a relationship”

“Really hot sex,” Scarlet said.

“It’s done now, anyway. I decided to not see him anymore.”

Scarlet gasped, “Fort Stella.”

“Stella, let him in. He’s a good man. He won’t hurt you intentionally.”

“Intentionally. It’s unintentional that I’m worried about.”

Scarlet let out an audible sigh, “You’re making the wrong choice.”

Glaring at her, I said, “It’s my choice to make. Enough.”

Pulling out my phone, I text Jamie.

To: Jamie… I enjoyed our time together. But the more I think about it, the more I realize what a terrible idea it is. It’s been good, but it can’t happen again.

I put my phone on the table, but he doesn’t respond. I’m relieved or I try to convince myself that I’m relieved. Touching my lips, I remember the feeling of his mouth on mine. Yes, I did the right thing. He breaks all of my rules, and the rules are there for a good reason. I have to protect myself. The mind blowing sex isn’t worth getting hurt. I can find someone else to have sex with that doesn’t touch me quite like that. And doesn’t kiss me.

Bethany whispers to me, “You kissed him.”

I stare at her in disbelief.

“I don’t kiss,” I say.

“Oh, but you did. You keep touching your lips. Not only did you kiss him, you can’t stop thinking about it.”

Shaking my head at her, I only say, “Stop.”

“Fort Stella,” she says.

“By the way, you should probably know he is one of the suspense authors on Drew’s short list.”

Laughing I say, “Fucking fantastic.”

Trying to relax, I convince myself that there are others on the list, so I shouldn’t worry. Just because he’s on a list doesn’t mean he’s the one. Maybe I could dissuade Drew from considering Jamie. Maybe I could just refuse to work with him altogether. Although, I’d have to explain why and I’m not very interested in that.

“Alright ladies, I must go before my coach turns into a pumpkin.”
