“Yet in the hallway, your eyes were begging for me to kiss you.”

I glared at him, “I don’t know what you thought you saw, but you’re sorely mistaken. Maybe you are a reader of romance novels.”

“Don’t you have to be an incurable romantic to write those types of books?”

Rolling my eyes again, “No, you need an imagination. I am not an incurable romantic. I never will be.”

“You write about murderers. Are you a murderer?”

“No, Stella. I’m not a murderer.”

Getting up, “Thank you for the drink, Jamie. I am going to go.”

Going to the door he says, “Wait.”

I turn around and he’s standing in front of me. My heartbeat accelerates. My face feels flushed. I feel like my heart may actually pound out of my chest.

He pulls me into him, and his lips collide into mine. His lips feel soft and inviting.

I hesitated at first because I know this is wrong. I didn’t kiss, but it felt so good. I part my lips and his tongue is searching for mine. Putting his arms around me, he pulls me closer and a moan escapes from my mouth. I’m melting into him, my fingers pulling at his hair. What am I doing? I don’t kiss. But I want this.

His mouth is devouring me. I never want to come up for air.

I’ve wanted nothing more, but it’s so confusing. I have not kissed someone in so long and no one has ever kissed me like this. My head tells me it’s wrong and don’t let it happen again, but my body is craving more.

He whispers in my ear, “Goodnight, Stella. I hope you see now what you’re missing.”

Then he licks my earlobe and I’m ready to combust.

Turning to leave I say, “Goodnight Jamie.”

I do not know what just happened. I know I wanted more of those kisses. His mouth tasted wonderful and felt even better. What’s happening to me? My rules have always worked, that’s why I follow them. I just broke one of my cardinal rules. The only thing I can think about is breaking it again.

CHAPTER 2

My alarm goes off at seven o’clock in the morning and I’m not impressed with waking up early. I have a meeting at my publisher’s office at nine. Coffee. I need coffee and not this garbage they leave in the room for you, so I wandered downstairs to the coffee shop on the first floor. I stepped into the elevator and pressed one. The elevator is going up. Why is the elevator going up? Come on. I keep pressing the number one button as if it will suddenly start going down instead of up.

The doors open, and Jamie looks at me with surprise. As he steps in, I move to the far corner, keeping my eyes glued to the floor. He moves in front of me, putting an arm on both sides of me, effectively blocking me, “You can’t even look at me after last night?”

Hesitantly, I looked up at him. I gulped my gasp down as I instantly became flushed.

His eyes were burning right through to my core. He moved his mouth to my ear, “Stella, you look so beautiful.”

Somehow, he must know that when he whispers in my ear, I melt. Does he know what he does to me? Again, he licks my earlobe so slowly, “I can’t wait to make you come.”

My eyes are closed as I try to rid myself of this feeling. With that, the doors opened, and he walked with me.

“That’s awfully presumptuous of you, don’t you think?”

“I’m used to getting my way. I see the way you look at me, react to me. I may need to be patient but it will happen.”

“So you’re going to just keep bothering me until I cave?”

A wicked smile crosses his lips, “Are you feeling hot and bothered?”

Rolling my eyes, “Oh stop with the sex shit.”
