Mendez smiled. “For as long as we need it.”

Jack sank back down. As much as he would love to fool around with Mendez, he was so damn tired. “Can I ask you to just hold me while I sleep?”

“Anything you need.” Mendez kicked his shoes off and crawled in behind Jack, pulling him into strong arms. How long had he dreamed of something like this, someone who cared about him for more than just a lay or money? Mendez was offering Jack the world on a platter, so why was Jack so hesitant to take it?

Chapter Seven

As soon as Jack was fast asleep, Mendez got up and walked out the back door. He wasn’t even sure who’s house this was, but it was located on the outskirts of town, giving them plenty of privacy.

All things considered, Jack had taken the news of them being mates pretty damn well, though Mendez’s jaw hurt like a bitch from his mate punching him. The guy had a mean left hook. Mendez wasn’t even upset about it. If that was how Jack wanted to cope, Mendez would get into a boxing ring with the guy and let Jack take out his frustrations.

Though Mendez had a more creative way they could pound on each other. Jack had just looked too tired, and the guy needed rest. Not in a hotel room in Vegas or in a car. In Mendez’s arms for a solid week, sleeping. Sex didn’t matter to him, just as long as his mate got the rest he needed.

Was he worried about what Jack had just told him, about being sick? Mendez didn’t like the fact that Jack wouldn’t mate with him out of some sort of guilt about using him. The guy could use him for whatever he wanted just as long as he was healthy. Mendez wasn’t lying to his mate. If the doctor said it was advanced, he was taking Jack to the nearest flat surface and binding their souls.

He wasn’t going to lose his mate.

But there was something Mendez needed to handle right now.

“I know you’re out here, Jesse.” He didn’t even have to shout. Jesse Hart would be able to hear him, no problem.

The wolf smiled as he revealed himself, emerging from a shadow. “You know how to bruise a guy’s ego. And here I thought I was being discreet.”

Mendez snorted. “I smelled you as soon as I got out of the car. How did you know I’d be here?” Mendez hadn’t even known where he would be until he’d called Grey for a house they could use for the night.

“Ian called Grey. When you called the alpha about this place, Grey called me.”

Mendez should have known that Ian Driscoll wouldn’t just sit idly by. The guy was always hands-on with his business. Mendez wasn’t even sure if Ian ever took a break, let alone a vacation.

“You’re aware I’m lethal right now.” Not yet, entirely, but Mendez’s wolf still snarled with someone so close to his mate. If he’d claimed Jack tonight, he and Jesse wouldn’t be talking. Mendez would have tried to kill him for prowling around.

Jesse nodded. “I’m aware. That’s why I’ve been keeping my distance.” He scrubbed a hand over his hair. “Look, I’m just doing what Ian asked me to do. I’ll stay far enough away, but I’ve been asked to keep an eye on the situation while you two are in Willow Point.”

Because Mendez wasn’t fully focused right now. Not like he would normally be with a client. Then again, he wasn’t with just any client. “Fair enough.”

Mendez wasn’t going to waste his breath telling the wolf to leave. Even if he demanded Jesse get the hell out of there, the guy wasn’t going to disobey Ian. Jesse would simply fade farther into the shadows, but he would still be there.

“Go tend to your mate,” Jesse said. “I got the perimeter.”

Mendez gave him a chin lift before he stepped back inside. Jack was still asleep when he went into the room. He undressed then climbed into bed, curling around his mate.

Jack stirred. “Mendez?”

“Is there anyone else who gets into bed with you?” Mendez kissed Jack’s neck.

Jack yawned. “Sure, I have them lined up around the corner waiting for their chance.”

Mendez grinned against Jack’s shoulder, though the thought of any other man touching his mate left a burning sensation in his gut. “I don’t doubt that. You’re too good-looking to resist.”

Jack made a noncommittal noise. “Flattery will get you everywhere.”

“That easy?”

“With you.” Jack turned over and looked up at Mendez. God, Jack had some amazing hazel eyes. They were dark pools right now, shining with need.

His mate stole his damn senses. No wonder Ian had sent Jesse. They saw what Mendez refused to believe. That he was compromised on this detail. He couldn’t look at the situation objectively. Not when all he thought about was sinking balls-deep into Jack, of making Jack his in the most permanent way.

“How are you feeling?” Now that Mendez knew the truth, he would be asking Jack that question a lot.
