“God.” Gem pinched the bridge of his nose before he looked at Alwyn. “He’s the hottest freaking country singer in the world. I swear you live under a rock.”

Alwyn shrugged, seeming unimpressed. “I listen to jazz, and Saint listens to rock.”

Gem threw his arm over Alwyn’s shoulder as he pulled the man away from their table. “Then let me enlighten you.”

“They’re freaking adorable,” McKenna said. “You wouldn’t know it because Alwyn hides the fact, but he has pointy ears.”

Jack turned, but McKenna was right. Alwyn’s hair covered them. “I really would have loved to see them.”

It seems coming home was very enlightening. Jack had no idea Willow Point was that interesting. How had he not known any of this when he’d lived here?

He looked over at Mendez when his mate laughed. Mate. Jack liked that word. “What?”

“Nothing.” Mendez grinned. “Welcome to my world.”

Taylor snorted. “All good until you’re around Gem when he’s hyped-up on pastries from Kent’s Café. Alwyn’s even worse. Have you ever seen a fae bounce around? Not fun.”

McKenna laughed, and Taylor looked at her as if she hung the moon and stars. Jack’s chest tightened, glad she’d found someone to lover her that deeply. That made Jack look at Mendez, and he was shocked to see that same look in his gray eyes.

Jack blushed as he looked away then saw McKenna smiling at him. Jack rolled his eyes and was thankful when their food arrived. They spent the next hour catching up and enjoying their time together.

* * * *

Three days of his mom stuffing him with food, side-eyeing Jack and Mendez, and fussing over them, and then Jack was on his private jet as he and Mendez flew to Memphis.

Already he missed Willow Point, but it was time to go home. Jack sat there looking out the window, a thousand thoughts rushing through his head as Mendez sat two seats away, talking on his phone.

They touched down, and Jack stretched before he deplaned. A limo was waiting for him on the tarmac. The driver shoved their luggage into the trunk as Jack and Mendez slipped into the backseat.

Jack sighed. “Now I need a vacation from my vacation.”

Mendez chuckled. “Your mom was the best, though I think she caught on to us.”

“I think she did. She kept fussing over you the most. Trying to steal my mom?” Jack arched a brow.

“With her cooking, hell yeah.” Mendez grinned. “I’m also trying to steal her son.”

Jack looked toward the privacy glass, but the driver hadn’t returned yet. “You want to keep that down?”

Mendez shrugged. “I can hear where your driver is, so I know we’re alone right now. I would never say anything like that within listening distance of anyone.”

Jack was dying to crawl into Mendez’s lap but refrained as the driver slid into his seat and pulled away. The trip to Jack’s house was about forty minutes, and by the time he walked through the front door, he was exhausted.

Although Mendez had said his cancer would go away, Jack still wanted to make a follow-up with his doctor. If Dr. Platt said he didn’t have it, Jack would say the tests in Vegas must have been a mistake. If Dr. Platt confirmed Dr. Chastine’s findings, Jack wasn’t sure what he would do.

“Let me give you the nickel tour.” Jack showed Mendez around, making him familiar with their home. Their home, because Jack was mated to Mendez, which meant, in an off-shoot sort of way, they were married.

“You have a nice home,” Mendez said when they ended the tour in his kitchen, which would be any chef’s dream. There was a huge gunmetal farmhouse sink in the middle of dark oak cabinets with nickel finishes and smoky glass fronts on each door. The touch faucet was also gunmetal, and there was an enormous island in the middle with eight gas burners and a kettle faucet. His refrigerator blended into the wall and was huge enough to hold food for a large party.

It was so pristine because Jack never cooked.

“Thanks, but it’s your home, too.”

Something passed behind Mendez’s eyes.

Jack frowned. “Where do you live?”

“Got a small apartment close to work. I’m never really there since Ian has me working constantly.” Mendez pressed his palms against the marble top island. “It pays good, so he gets no complaints from me.”
