Gloria gave a low growl as she looked Jesse up and down with interest. Her growl had no teeth since she was human. She knew nothing about their world, and Sam wanted to keep it that way. Not that he didn’t trust her, but the number one rule of nonhumans was to keep their existence a secret.

Besides, Gloria tended to talk too much at times, and Sam never wanted her to slip up and tell his secret. It wouldn’t be on purpose, but why take the chance?

And she was right. It was hard to pretend Jesse wasn’t even there. Sam would never admit how attracted he was to his new bodyguard. That would probably feed the man’s ego, which Sam refused to do, though his body tingled just thinking about how Jesse’s hands would feel exploring him, how those lips would taste on his, and how fat his dick might be, because damn, the guy was built. It would be a crying shame if he had the body of a finely tuned machine and had a small package.

Not that Sam was ever going to find out. Even if he was interested, which he wasn’t, his father had made it very clear that his son was off-limits, and no one defied Malcolm Whitlock.

Not if they wanted to continue breathing.

Jesse was in a daze as he stared at his gorgeous mate standing in the middle of a sex shop. His mate. God, could he have screwed the pooch any harder on this one? Ian was going to kill hm. Not that it was Jesse’s fault. Fate handpicked mates to be together, so that choice was out of Jesse’s hands.

He still needed to figure out what to do. Mr. Whitlock had made it very clear that his son’s virtue was to remain intact. Not that Jesse thought Sam was a virgin. Not when he ran a fucking sex shop. But Jesse didn’t want to tangle with a powerful demon. Not if he could avoid it.

Luckily, demons didn’t know who their mate was unless they slept together. That gave Jesse time to figure out what to do about this entire situation. He’d known Sam was his when they’d gotten into the car together. His mate’s scent had wrapped around Jesse like a lover’s caress.

Mr. Whitlock had also called Sam delicate and naïve. Jesse wasn’t going to take advantage of that, no matter how badly he wanted to bind their souls. No matter how badly he wanted Sam to belong to him. No matter how badly he wanted to bend the twink over the nearest flat surface and fuck him until neither of them could walk.

Jesse clenched his jaw and stared straight ahead, forcing himself not to look Sam over, to stare at his black hair or dark brown eyes or how nicely his ass flared. Forced himself not to think about how he ached just to touch Sam’s slim body and explore it at length.

Not to think about all the toys on display that had Jesse’s imagination running wild. If anything, he would love to try one of those new vibrators out on Sam.

Gloria walked delicately toward Jesse in her high heels and stopped right in front of him. “So, would you care to try out our newest product?”

Jesse managed to keep his canines from lengthening. He did not like being poked fun at.

“Leave him alone, Gloria. From what I’ve seen so far, he’s rigid and cold inside,” Sam said. “He has strict instructions from my father to keep that stick firmly up his ass.”

Gloria fanned herself. “You’re not helping by talking about things inserted into asses, Sammy.”

Jesse wanted to smile. He liked Gloria, in the way that someone might like an irritating cat. He knew from the large Adam’s apple that Gloria was a man but preferred to be identified as a woman. Jesse had no problem with that, though her closeness made him uncomfortable. Not because she was transgender but because his mate stood right there and the wrong person was getting cozy with him.

He was also pissed that his mate had described him that way. Jesse was far from rigid and cold, but he was fighting not to claim his mate, which was one hell of a battle. He had to remain aloof right now, or his wolf just might emerge and take what was theirs. The stick up his ass was the only thing preventing Jesse from doing just that.

“Oh, poo.” Gloria glided away. “You’re no fun, Sammy.”

“I’m a lot of fun,” Sam argued. “I just don’t want you wasting your breath on the robot.”

Another kick to Jesse’s gut, but he remained stoic. Though he was dying to tell Sam they were mates. Wouldn’t that knock the wind right out of the pampered prince’s sails? And there was no doubt Sam was pampered. He shouldn’t be throwing insults when he was just as arrogant as Jesse was accused of being. Sam’s daddy met all of his needs, and it showed.

Sam glanced at him but quickly looked away. Was that remorse in his dark eyes? Jesse stiffened his shoulders and refused to think about it. Clearly fate had been on drugs the day Sam was destined to be Jesse’s mate. They were about as compatible as fire and ice, and Jesse refused to be the ice. He wasn’t going to thaw around Sam.

Chapter Two

A twinge of guilt sliced through Sam after he called Jesse a robot. He didn’t know the guy’s story, and it wasn’t his style to judge anyone, especially if he didn’t know the person. Sam was just pissed that he needed a bodyguard to begin with. It wasn’t Jesse’s fault, and Sam needed to stop insulting him.

Though Jesse still stood there too stiffly.

Sam wished he knew what the guy was thinking. He also wished he knew why Jesse was such a distraction to his senses. He was a wolf shifter, there to do a job, which led to Sam thinking of the two times he’d nearly been kidnapped.

The first time had been right outside of Whitlock Industries. The abductor had been bold, trying to take Sam in the parking garage. But Sam had forgotten his phone in his father’s office, and security had come down to bring it to him. The security guard was a hulking demon who’d yanked Sam out of the stranger’s clutches, and honestly, Sam had no idea what happened after that.

He had taken off to the elevator, desperate to escape.

The second attempt was still fresh in Sam’s mind. He could still feel that hand over his mouth, still felt the other hand gripping tightly around his upper arm, squeezing as the hooded person tried to yank Sam into the van. There had been more than one kidnapper, because he’d seen a driver and another guy in the back, ready to slam the door once Sam was pulled in.

Gloria said something, but Sam was too deep in thought to hear her. When he did finally look up, he saw Jesse watching him with intensity. The guy was more than likely ticked that he had to spend time in a lingerie shop surrounded by sex toys.
