Jesse gave a low growl. “With pleasure.”

Just as Jesse took a step toward him, Sam’s phone rang. His heart thumped hard when he saw it was Gloria calling his mate. Sam quickly answered, putting the call on speaker.

“Tell me you’re okay.”

“Why wouldn’t I be?” Gloria asked. “I was at Tongues and Temples helping out with a show. Good god, Mavis was a complete drama queen when her dress wouldn’t fit the way she wanted it to. She went into hysterics, and I spent an hour trying to calm her down. After the event was over, we went out to celebrate her winning and I fell asleep at her apartment. I would have called you, but I left my phone at home. I know I normally don’t do that, but when Mavis called me freaking out, I just ran to her rescue.”

And Terry had taken advantage of Gloria’s forgetfulness by using her phone to lure Sam to her apartment.

Jesse sagged with relief. His mate’s best friend had been at a drag queen show. Then his heart hurt because he knew Sam was going to have to tell her about Terry. He was certain Sam wouldn’t lie to her. Sure, his mate could come up with a story about Terry leaving her, but in the end, Gloria would still be devastated. Jesse knew the truth would be best but not right now. The truth could wait until tomorrow.

As if Sam had read Jesse’s mind, he said, “I’ll talk to you soon.” He made kissy noises that had Jesse giving a small growl.

“Later, Sammy. We’ll talk tomorrow.”

And when Sam told her the truth, Jesse would be there for both of them. He’d not only gained a mate but had a feeling Gloria would be in their lives for a very long time. Jesse didn’t mind that since he liked her and already felt protective toward Gloria. If another guy came along and hurt her, Jesse would rip their fucking heart out.

Chapter Eleven

After he hung up, Sam groaned when Jesse pressed him against the wall right where they stood. He felt the man’s erection pressing into his stomach, proof of how much his mate wanted him. Not that he’d doubted the fact, but it was good to have the proof as well. To feel that hardness and know it was for him.

He still couldn’t believe he’d stood up to his father, and Sam felt elated that he had, though he hadn’t wanted to hurt Malcolm. He still couldn’t believe Malcolm had thought Sam would cut him out of his life. Never. And not because his father financially took care of him. Because he loved Malcolm with all his heart.

But when Malcolm had flipped about Jesse being a shifter and Sam’s mate, Sam knew he had to put his foot down, or his father would try to keep them apart. He was still reeling about his mother, and it would take Sam time to get over that, but Jesse wasn’t the shifter who’d killed her, and that was all that mattered to him.

“You’re thinking too hard.” Jesse slid his hands up Sam’s sides, raising goosebumps along the way. He slipped his hands down Sam’s back then cupped his ass. Sam hissed before Jesse thoroughly kissed him, making all other thoughts scatter.

Sam hooked his fingers into the belt loops of Jesse’s jeans and yanked him closer, feeling emboldened by the fact that they’d confessed their love for each other. It was like a high Sam had never experienced before, and Jesse just didn’t seem close enough, though they were pressed together. Sam arched his back when Jesse squeezed his ass, grinding his denim-covered cock into his belly.

As Jesse kissed him, a gentle stroke of his tongue against Sam’s, he touched Sam’s face softly with the back of his hand and drew it downward. Jesse slid his hands beneath Sam’s waistband and grabbed flesh, kneading his ass, a lone finger sliding down his crease as he worked those perfect lips down Sam’s throat.

“Jesse…” Sam wasn’t sure what he was about to say. His mate made it hard to breathe, let alone think.

Their gazes locked as Jesse lifted his head. “What do you need, Sam?”

Jesse knew exactly what Sam needed. He’d already asked his mate to take him to bed.

“Tell me, Sam. I want to hear you say the words.”

It seemed Jesse liked pushing Sam out of his comfort zone. With anyone else, Sam wouldn’t have. He wasn’t exactly shy when it came to sex, but Sam needed a connection to the person, something he hadn’t had with Brett or any of his past boyfriends. It hadn’t helped that Brett had tried to force Sam into doing what he wanted, never considering Sam’s feelings in the matter. It had been all about Brett’s pleasure, not easing Sam into experimenting.

He was starting to understand himself better. Jesse was showing Sam a whole new side to himself that Sam never thought he would enjoy. But with Jesse, Sam wanted to push his own boundaries.

Was willing to push them.

Sam’s breathing grew harder and more audible as he stared into Jesse’s eyes. “I’m not sure what I want. I know I want you to fuck me, but there are so many possibilities before that happens.”

Jesse’s nostrils flared. “Baby, anything you want, I’m willing to do. Do you want me to take control?”

Sam nodded. That whole other side to Sam might be waking up, but he was pretty sure Jesse had a better imagination. He also knew that his mate would rock his freaking world.

Jesse pulled away from him, and Sam mourned the loss, but then his mate grabbed his hand and led him upstairs. Sam couldn’t stop shivering from anticipation. Jesse squeezed his hand in reassurance as they entered Sam’s bedroom. Their bedroom.

When Sam turned, ready to yank his shirt off, Jesse grabbed Sam’s wrists and stopped him. Sam furrowed his brows. “I thought this was what you wanted.”

“I do, but you gave me control, Sam, and I intend to do this my way.” He pulled Sam into his arms, crushing his mouth down on Sam’s. Jesse kissed him hard and deep. When his mate pulled back, he had a hard, harsh beauty to him. He wore a day’s growth of beard, and his eyes glowed with need.

Sam could see himself loving Jesse for the rest of his life. Not because the man was gorgeous, though that was a plus, but because he truly cared about Sam and was the entire package rolled into one stunning, sexy man.
