He strode in and bent, pulling me up by my shoulders and kissing me soundly. “Okay, woman, enough. Go to sleep and stop calling for me to constantly come in here so you can kiss me. I can only take so much.”

Then he left, leaving me turned on and suddenly lonely.

I knew if I called, he’d be here in a moment. If I lifted the blanket, he’d slide in with me and kiss me again. Until we couldn’t stop. Until we were naked and joined together—and it was too soon for that.

I rolled over and burrowed under the blankets.

Right?

A short while later, I opened my eyes and peered at the clock. It was almost three, so I had obviously fallen asleep. I looked at the door, surprised to see it closed, the room pitch dark. Damien must have checked on me and shut the door when he saw I was sleeping. I sighed and shut my eyes, when a sound had me opening them again. The mattress dipped behind me, and I tried not to laugh.

“Determined, aren’t you?”

“I told you.”

I froze. That wasn’t Damien’s voice. Rough hands grabbed me, rolling me over, and I was pinned into place by a heavy body. Wearing a hoodie. He pressed a knife to my throat, holding up his phone so I could see his twisted smile. Blood was splattered on his hoodie and across his face.

“You didn’t listen, and now everyone has to suffer. Your boyfriend is dead, and you’re next.”

I started to whimper.

Andy’s voice dropped. “Once I’m done with you.”

He pressed the knife harder, and I felt the slice of the blade in my throat. He smiled, evil and malevolent.

“Scream while you can, bitch. Your tongue will be gone soon enough. It’ll keep you quiet until I’m done with you.”

My cry echoed off the walls.

CHAPTEREIGHT

Damien

Her shriek jolted me out of the half sleep I was in. I was too anxious, too worried about her to fully relax.

The terror in her bloodcurdling scream woke me fully. My feet hit the floor before the next one pierced the air. Her begging and pleading were loud. Fervent. Her sobs wild in fear. She cried my name repeatedly.

“Damien!”

“No, please, don’t! Not him! Don’t!”

“Don’t hurt him!”

“No! Damien!”

I rushed through her doorway, the light from the hall filling the room. She was upright in her bed, braced against the headboard, fighting off an invisible intruder, crying and out of control.

I grabbed her shoulders, desperate to wake her. I shook her gently, speaking loudly, calling her name.

“Raven, baby, open your eyes. Baby, it’s me. I’m here.” I shook her again, speaking louder.

“Raven—look at me!”

Her eyes snapped open, the panic and fear striking at my heart. Tears poured down her cheeks. I cupped her face. “It was a nightmare. A bad nightmare. I’m right here, baby. Right here.”

Her gaze bounced everywhere, her body shaking. She gripped my wrists, gasping for air.

“D-Damien?”
