Raine was a stone Adonis as his taut muscles and glowing pupils roamed over her. His piercing eyes were stark and filled with lust. “You’re mine and I will never let you go.”

He whispered the words in the low undertone of his alpha, but he could have screamed them. The beast within her rose to meet the wolf it had chosen. It growled its approval and its acceptance. She opened her mouth to respond, but no words would escape. Denial was her only defense. Her only chance to save him. To save his family.

Her family.

He pulled her against his body. “Do you understand what I’m saying, Dannika? There will never be another. You belong to me. Whatever life throws at us, we face together.”

She would’ve given anything at that moment to get him inside her. To relieve the mounting pressure that he had created. She wanted everything he offered. A future. A life. Hers would be over soon, so she gave him what he needed: the truth. He was and would forever be her choice. “Every breath I take belongs to you. I love you.”

He drove into her, parting her slick flesh, stretching the tight muscles with a battering ram. Lightning raced through her blood, burning away the sting of pain from his invasion. His fingers gripped her ass so tightly she was sure they’d leave a permanent impression. He thrust deeper and deeper, over and over, until she was breathless, her body a slave to his dark possession.

She clung to him, hanging on as if her life depended on it. He was large, and her too tight, but it only added to the mounting pleasure. Her shadow coiled around them in a dark, mystical embrace before he rose to do the same in a black tornado of desire and ecstasy. A visible creation of their lust. Their union.

He rocked her with every brutal thrust. Their souls were as much a prisoner to the relentless passion as they were, biting and clawing at one another, attempting to get closer. To share the same skin.

She screamed when his cock swelled, and he bit down on her neck. The sting sent a raging inferno of pleasure rocking through her body. She clamped down, milking his cock with her orgasm.

Her body quivered as her shadow retracted. She kept her eyes averted as it took one last caress over Raine’s body before resuming its place within her. Her last moment of bliss.

She couldn’t move. Her body was limp, and her mind fractured as she contemplated the consequences of her actions. How she would walk away from the only place she belonged.

She put her arms around his neck as he carried her to the bed. He lay beside her, nestling her under his arm, with her head on his chest. His heartbeat was soothing, lulling her into a sense of security she couldn’t keep. She fought to keep her breath even, waiting until Raine fell asleep.

It was rare for an alpha to be exhausted, but she had counted on it. The instant she saw Raine, she knew he hadn’t slept. While his shadow didn’t require sleep, the human part of him did. She wouldn’t have much time. A few hours before he recovered.

She rose and put on her clothes. She didn’t take any other items, except her reaper blade. It might be a long shot, but she hoped for one last chance at Killian. It would cost her life, but perhaps she could remove the threat to the shadow clans and pray Raine forgave her.

She dissolved, moving through the pathways to another room within the caves. Darren’s room was as she remembered. Maps littered the coffee table and desk, but he had been working on a new painting, the outline barely legible on the cream canvas. She trailed her fingers over the pencil outline before grabbing a pen and paper to leave a quick note.

Her heart broke as she dissolved, entering the pathways. There was no pain like the torture of her body reforming inside the salvage office.

Killian sat in a leather swivel chair with his feet on the desk. “Welcome back.”

CHAPTER7

Though Killian smiled at her, Dannika sensed his anger. She’d expected him to be smug. He’d won. She’d done what he had asked. Left her home. Her mate. Her one chance at happiness. His rage licked the air like a living flame.

He stood, leaning against the desk littered with paper. “If I didn’t know better, I’d assume you followed my instructions.”

His fangs lengthened, alerting her to an unforeseen danger.

“I did everything you asked. You know I’m not lying.”

Killian’s eyes narrowed on her. “You’re not. Interesting.”

Part of her wanted to know what caused his distrust. Maybe it was just an effect being the reaper leader. “Tell me about the artifact. The bowl.”

Killian’s lips twitched. “You think to steal the artifact. Possibly kill me and destroy it. You are so intent on evading your destiny that you can’t see the advantages of turning reaper.”

While he wasn’t wrong about her intentions, he was three steps ahead of her. Yes, she wanted to avoid turning reaper, but she hadn’t devised a plan to steal the artifact or destroy it. They were seedlings of a plan, yet to develop. “How can you know that?”

His eyes clouded over. White smoke flickered with the red fire. “You’re running through the caves, but you don’t have a map to the tunnels. The pathways are closed to you. Julius catches you before I arrive. He was always fond of samurai swords. It took him a year to learn to shift a blade that size into the shadows. He hopes that bleeding you, collecting your blood, will appease me, but it doesn’t. He beheads you. His jealousy over me allowing you to live in the human world, when he was forced to turn reaper, is too much. While I see these events and should be able to control my rage over your death, I don’t. I kill Julius, dropping his body beside yours. I leave with the chalice in my hand, while you and Julius rot in that cave for eternity.”

Dannika wrapped her arms around her body, attempting to stop the shiver that ran through her. While her analytical brain could accept that those events weren’t guaranteed, the possibility was a harsh reality. As was the knowledge of Julius’s hatred. His jealousy.

He had every right to hate her. While she had considered herself cursed, Julius had lived with a monster that watched her. Did all reapers feel as Julius did? Killian interfered with her life, but she’d had moments of happiness, years with Jacob and Lori that she would thank God for. Julius had Killian. A monster. A maniacal leader who would use anyone to further his goal. His reaper son was as much a pawn as she was.

“Those events aren’t guaranteed.” Dannika wasn’t sure if she whispered the words to reassure Killian or herself.
