“You’re not a reaper, Dannika. You may have taken Killian’s blood, but you still have a pure soul.”

“Killian needs me to retrieve something for him. Test it with my blood. At first, he thought I needed to remain as a shadow, but he said my animal won’t die when I turn reaper.”

Raine’s face hardened. “You’re not turning reaper, Dannika.”

She rubbed her neck. “Zade told me reapers who are forced to kill differ from those who choose it.”

“I’m not sure you want to discuss your reaper mate with me,” Raine growled.

“He didn’t force me to do anything. In fact, I feel sorry for him and the others like him. They didn’t choose. Killian forced them to kill. Now they prey on human predators. Murderers. Criminals.”

Raine nodded. “Ferguson’s reapers.”

She sucked in a breath. “You know about Ferguson?”

“Yes. He’s been a reaper for a long time. He rarely attacks the shadow warriors, only those that interfere with his prey. We are aware he only kills human predators. Due to his ethics, we leave him alone. Honestly, he’s an enigma to the shadow clans. He is more powerful than Killian or the previous reaper leaders. We don’t know why he hasn’t taken control of the clan.”

“Some of them are different. I’m hoping we can save them.” When Raine said nothing, she glanced around the cavern. “How do you protect this cavern from the reapers?”

Raine pointed to an opening at the end of the cavern. Water dripped from his arm back to the pool. “There’s a light circle inside the rock. It skirts the entire cavern except for that walkway. We lined the opening with blessed steel.” He lowered his arm. “Now, are you going to join me?”

She removed her clothes slowly before stepping into the steaming pool. Bubbles teased her sensitive skin as she sank to her shoulders. The foam danced around her body like new snow.

Raine slid his hands over her heated flesh in a casual massage. The despair and guilt of her actions drifted away in the healing waters of the spring. She moved with his hands, swaying to nature’s song. Her shadow reached for his, connecting them, fueling the passion as it built between them.

He caressed her flat stomach, circling the ring at her navel, before tracing each rib. His loving touch moved upward, cupping her breast gently as his thumb moved over her nipple. She closed her eyes as he made his way to her collarbone, worshiping her skin as if it were the finest silk. Blood pounded in her ears, a slow burn of liquid lava pumping through her veins.

She opened her eyes, meeting his. The iridescent blue darkened with desire. Slumberous. Sexy. An ancient God that had awakened for her alone. She took his hand, clasping his fingers in hers, and stepped closer to him, her breasts sliding against his slick chest. With her other hand, she traced the droplets that ran down his arm, every touch meant to heighten his need for her.

In the bubbling pool of warmth, time stopped. There were only Dannika and Raine. The darkness and the beauty their cavern oasis created swirled between them like black magic, an undeniable force that would let nothing stand in its way. This was a moment to be forever thankful.

Dannika moaned when Raine’s fingers found her beneath the bubbling water. The slow exploration had her arching toward him, clutching his shoulders. The craving grew as the beast within fought for freedom. His blood thundered in her ears, his heartbeat matching hers.

With their shadows connected, it was impossible to tell who manifested the insatiable hunger, an unfathomable lust that neither could ignore. Maybe that was the way of mates. She wasn’t sure, only that the ravenous appetite needed to be sated.

“Do something,” she hissed.

Raine took her mouth, sweeping his tongue in the seam of her lips as he backed them towards a slanted, smooth rock at the edge of the pool. He positioned her on the edge, widening her legs to accommodate his hips. His fingers bit into the soft cheeks of her ass as he thrust his hips forward.

Dannika cried out, winding her arms around his neck. Her body gripped his, then released when he pulled back, only to repeat the action, again and again. She knew the moment Raine’s control snapped. His growl vibrated in her mouth as he drove into her, ramping up the desire until she was sure she would touch the heavens.

She thrashed beneath him, pulling his hips against her, attempting to reach the apex she so desperately needed. She went wild, crying for him to end the torture and give her the ultimate pleasure. Her begging didn’t go unanswered.

He bit her neck. The sting sent her hurdling into an orgasmic tornado swirling in her body as she milked his cock, sending him over the apex. He growled her name, causing a second series of mini orgasms to spike in her core.

They lay upon the rock as water lapped at their legs. The beauty of the cavern made Dannika want to cry. She wished they could stay locked away in the warm sanctuary, hidden from the reapers. From her father.

Raine eased out of her. “What is it?”

She put her hand on his. “It isn’t you. I’m afraid of giving Killian what he needs to destroy the shadow clans.”

“You said he needs you to retrieve something.”

“Yes, but Julius said he only needed my blood. We both know he already has that.”

He ran his hand over her hair. “What do you want to do?”

She nibbled her lip. “You’re going to hate this, but I want to visit the Bokor. He may know what Killian wants from me.”
