“What profession? I thought he was ex-military.”

Riley looked at her father. “After mom died, he turned to the church. He found solace in helping others deal with trauma. It led to him becoming a priest.”

CHAPTER29

Riley stood in the living room of Colton’s house amongst the trees. He had told her it was theirs, and that she could decorate it anyway she saw fit, but the true gift was the freedom of running through the forest, and a future she’d never dare believe in. She smiled as Colton pressed his chest against her back and wrapped his arms around her waist. They gazed at the birds flitting between the branches.

“Tell me that you’re happy,” he said.

She turned in his arms wrapping her hands around his neck. “This is more than I dared to believe in. The transition cured my father of his illness. He will struggle with feeding, but we will make it work.”

Colton frowned. “I’m glad Daniel survived the transition. Him being a priest has given the clans a new outlook on our existence. Any concerns about you transitioning from a demon, have been dispelled. Steele has waved the mandatory testing for Daniel. We no longer euthanize a fledgling that has no animal and turns reaper, but I hope he will shift in time.”

“You’re concerned about something. What is it?” she asked.

“Daniel’s transition is a gift, but we are not immortal, and he is old. I don’t want you to have any misconceptions. He will pass in 30 to 50 years.”

She put her hands on either side of Colton’s face. “Death is a part of life. I expected his to come in the next two years and by the end he wouldn’t have known who I was. He will be given the opportunity to live his life as himself. To help the shadow clans in ways we are yet to understand. That is his gift. It’s how he helped so many in the church. Every day I have with him is a gift.”

Colton’s lips descended to hers. “You are the gift. One I will be forever thankful for.”

Her temperature soared within seconds as his mouth moved to hers. His magical tongue slipped between her lips, exploring, conquering her on a primal level. Their tongues dueled with one another until he shifted their clothes to the shadows. The need to be skin on skin, an instinct neither could ignore. She didn’t protest as he moved her to the couch, and lay her down.

His hands roamed her body, creating a firestorm of desire. Her flesh heated, yearned for more of his magical touch. She groaned as his fingers slipped between her sensitive folds, pressing into her velvet channel as his lips moved to her breast.

Riley arched toward him, riding his hand, almost coming apart as he worked her. His mouth tugged hard on her nipple, causing a rush of liquid between her thighs, coating his fingers in her warm juices. He moved her above his straining cock as his tongue lavished her nipple. The sensations coursing through her body had her heart pounding in her chest. It was heaven and hell. She wanted more, and she wanted it forever.

Colton’s eyes lit with an intense hunger. He would devour her. Consume her body and soul. She wanted everything he offered and more. He kissed her neck, then thrust up through the tight folds of her silken sheath, reveling in the sensation he created.

Air rushed from her lungs when he cupped her ass, holding her in place as he impaled her over and over. There was no thought. No reason. Only hard, unmitigated bliss, fueled by passion and dark power. A wondrous symphony that sang in her mind and exploded under her skin.

She clutched his shoulders as if they were the only haven in the tornado of emotion assaulting her body. Attempting to anchor herself in the tsunami of erotic sensation.

“Please, don’t stop.” She should be embarrassed by the pleas, but her body was on fire, begging for a cool stream to stay the raging inferno.

He pumped harder, anchoring her hips with his hands. She put a hand on the couch to combat the building pressure. Her nails dug into his flesh, marking him. Telling him without words he belonged to her alone.

Rippling waves of pleasure washed over her skin. She gripped him in a velvet vise. She screamed his name as he went over the apex, holding her to him like he would never let her go. She lay beneath him, floating in a sea of bliss, content to stay there forever. She felt a moment of regret when Colton moved from the couch and pulled her to her feet.

“Well, I’d rather stay in and continue this. We are going hunting. If your father’s transition is anything like yours, he will need to feed soon. I think it would be a lot easier for him, if you were there.”

She wrapped her arms around his waist. “Thank you for taking care of him. This part will be hard for both of us. I want to be there for him.”

Colton ran a finger along her forehead, and down her cheek. “I never believed in miracles. You’re beyond anything I ever hoped for. Dreamed of. I love you, Riley.”

“I know that our transition to clan life won’t be easy, but it is a gift, and I love you more than I can express. You gave me more than just my father. You gave me a future, one that includes safety, love and family.”

He kissed her again, but it was a gentle seduction of a man who worshiped the woman in his arms. “You’re my everything.”

EPILOGUE

Breck rolled his shoulders. While he would never admit it out loud, he feared the demon general more than he feared Ferguson. He approached Deruthel. “You asked to see me?”

Deruthel stood with his arms crossed, looking over the valley that the cougar clan had claimed as their own. “Get the Reapers ready. It’s time to enact the next phase of our plan.”

“We are unable to maintain a portal. Our numbers are too low for an all-out war,” Breck said.

“Riley’s sacrifice will open the fissure for good,” Deruthel said.

Breck arched his eyebrows. “You plan to kill her?”

Deruthel’s lips curled over his fangs. “Her destiny is far more binding than death.”
