Page 7 of Killing Me Softly

It was going so well until she told me who she was. She was just standing there, all curves and legs and wild hair, her pouty lips perfect for kissing and her eyes shining gold. I thought my night—hell, my life—had finally taken a turn for the better.

But then she went and told me she’s one of the spawns of my mother’s perfect little neighborhood full of people living their perfect little lives fake though they are. I’m never coming back here. I was never a part of it.

I do vaguely remember a wild haired red head from next door. But she was just a kid then and she’s not for me now.

I take the long way back to my dad’s house, trying really hard not to think about anything. But the way it always goes with these things, I can’t keep the flood of thoughts about all that’s wrong and bad and unfixable out. They’re a rushing river by the time I pull into the driveway of my dad’s home even though I already I’m not going in a couple of blocks back.

I can’t handle the stench, or the memories, or all the ways I don’t know how to start my life over. I should’ve stayed in the Marines. Right now, I have no idea why I didn’t. Only I do. The war was suddenly over and every damn sacrifice I made, that my friends and colleagues made was for nothing.

Coming back here was for nothing too.

I’m dialing Eagle’s number before I even decide to. Maybe he was a place for me to crash tonight. Maybe he even wants to get wasted with me before then, just like old times. I’d be his Devil’s Nightmare MC brother by now if I hadn’t left. And that would’ve been better than this. Maybe my father would still be alive if I was around to have his back.

“You change your mind?” Eagle asks as he picks up.

“Yeah.”

“Come over, then,” he says, amid chuckling and proceeds to give me the address.

And two minutes later I’m riding through the night again. Not exactly feeling like I’m riding towards a new life, but the wind in my face, the rumbling in my ears and the vibrations as the tires eat up the pavement sure make it all better.
