Between all that we found the love we’ve been searching for.

And I’m not letting it go.

I’ve been fiddling with my phone, using the sim card I got for him to get an Internet connection and at least post an update to my social media. I may not know exactly how many days we’ve been off-the-grid, but I know it’s been long enough for people to worry why I’m not posting. Trouble is, I’m barely getting a signal and nothing is loading properly.

I’m sitting on the front steps of the cabin’s porch because it has the best view of the mountains, which are just starting to develop the gorgeous sunset colors. Jax is in the forest, taking one of his walks, but I can already see him returning now. We always watch the sunset together.

He’s turning into quite the mountain man, with the beginning of a beard that he hasn’t shaved since we got here and his t-shirts and jeans all showing signs of hard work and wild living.

“You making a call?” he asks, eying the phone in my hand like it’s a snake.

I set it down on the step beside me and tap a spot for him to sit.

“I tried to post an update for my fans but I’m not sure if it went through,” I say. “I figured I had to, because otherwise Ariel might get worried.”

“Who’s Ariel?” he asks as he sits beside me. He smells of wild berries, the clean waters of the lake, and the fresh forest air. In short, like the sunset we’re about to be graced with.

“Veronica’s sister,” I answer.

“And who’s Veronica?”

“Chance’s girlfriend,” I say and smile at the shocked look on his face as he turns to me. Which is exactly the reaction I was going for.

“Chance has a girlfriend?” he asks and laughs. “I didn’t see that happening anytime soon. What happened to him staying available forall the ladies?”

“I guess he foundthe onesooner than he expected,” I say and laugh too.

It’s nice to just talk about our friends without mentioning everything that’s come between us. “And her sister Ariel is dating Ruin. She’s also my biggest fan and tends to get real worried if I don’t post updates regularly.”

“Well, she might be too busy consoling Ruin these days,” he says. “He was with the team that was supposed to be watching you when you ran away with me. I’m sure Scar cut them all a new one over that oversight.”

And here we are back to that.

“I left on my own and he knows that.”

“I doubt that changes much in his mind.” He tries to laugh at that too, but it’s a very brittle sound.

I wrap my arm around his waist and lean on his shoulder, looking at the mountains which are turning all sorts of lovely shades of pink today as the sun sets. The colors are reflected in our little river and I’m sure in his psychic orb eyes too, but I don’t want to look at that because I know I won’t like what I see.

“I wish we could just stay here forever,” I murmur. “How long has it been, anyway? It feels like either years or a day. I can’t tell.”

“Tomorrow’s the seventh day,” he says. “And tonight’s the eleventh hour it seems.”

“And what’s that supposed to mean.” I laugh, but it sounds just as brittle as his did.

“The last hour before the clock runs out and it’s all over,” he explains in a hollow voice. “That’s why you’re trying to reach home. Because you need to get back to your life.”

“Sometimes I feel like you’re not even listening to me,” I snap, but then take a deep breath to continue in a less confrontational tone. “I’ve been thinking… why is it so impossible for you to go home with me? Devil’s Nightmare MC has been successfully hiding criminals worse than you for decades. They can hide you too. And then we could have it all. My father will come around. He’s never said no to me that I can remember, and he’s not about to start now.”

He sighs and wraps his arm around my shoulders, pulling me closer. “It’s not just Scar. Everything else is fucked too. I almost got Hunter killed. Though if I’d been there to watch his back that night, it wouldn’t have come to that.”

“It turned out OK,” I mutter, because OK is too strong a word for how it all got resolved, and I’m still not fine thinking about Hunter almost dying.

“I also got friendly with the men who tried to kill Hunter and got Chance arrested for aiding and abetting a child trafficking operation.”

“You didn’t know that’s what it was, neither of you did,” I say.

“I knew something bigger was going on, and given what the Riders do, I could’ve guessed,” he says darkly. “What I should’ve done is gone with Hunter when he came to stop me. I think about that a lot. But I didn’t because I was too angry at everyone and everything.”
