Though he hoped she was stopping just to say goodnight, she wandered further into his office, settling herself in the chair opposite him.

“Something on your mind?” he asked, even though it was the very last thing he was interested in.

“Just checking in to see how you feel about the newest employee.”

Gareth wasn’t surprised by the topic, but he frowned at her. “Did Jay or Janessa ask you to check in with me about Aria?”

“No. But since I wasn’t part of the discussion to hire her, I thought I’d just see how you felt about her.”

“I don’t feel any way about her,” Gareth said, leaning back in his chair. “She was hired on Janessa’s recommendation and has only been here for a day. You’re better off asking Janessa’s opinion on how things are going since she’s the one doing the training.”

“Janessa’s hardly going to give an unbiased opinion of her since they’re friends and that’s why she wanted to hire her.”

Nora wasn’t exactly wrong. However, Gareth trusted Janessa to have the best interest of the clinic in mind, and not do anything that would jeopardize it.

“It’s been one day,” Gareth said. “I hardly think it’s fair to judge Aria just yet.”

“You should have hired someone with more experience.”

“Like one of the women you suggested?”

“Yes.” Nora shifted in her seat. “Either of them would have been excellent in the position.”

Gareth leaned back in his chair, clicking the pen he’d been using to make notes. “Jay called both of them.”

Nora’s brows lifted. “So why weren’t they considered?”

“Neither of them were interested in a job that lasted more than six months.”

“That would have given you time to find someone more qualified,” Nora said, crossing her arms as she lifted her chin.

“There was no need to train someone who would have only been in the position for a few months,” Gareth said. “Aria is who we chose.”

“Well, I hope you keep an open mind that she might not be the perfect fit for the clinic.”

Gareth narrowed his gaze at her. “And I hope you keep an open mind that she just might be a perfect fit for the clinic.”

Nora arched a brow at him, then got to her feet. “I highly doubt she’ll beperfect. No one is.”

Gareth laughed. “Except for you, right?”

“Of course,” Nora tossed over her shoulder as she left the office.

Things were going to be interesting for a little while. He hoped Nora wouldn’t make life difficult for Aria. However, since Nora had made all of their lives difficult at one time or another, it seemed likely she’d do that for Aria, too. Apparently, it was a rite of passage in the clinic.

Lucky for Aria, she had Janessa to run interference for her with Nora. Janessa had perfected that over the past couple of years.

He could hardly wait to share all of this with the guys at dinner. They had liked Nora well enough at first. However, when she’d started in with thewe’ll make a great doctor couple, they’d told him to be careful. It was too bad she hadn’t focused her attention on Wade or Jackson. At least then, the clinic would be a tension-free zone, and they wouldn’t be trying to find a doctor to replace Nora.

Putting aside his thoughts on Nora, Gareth finished up his work, then changed into more casual clothes before heading out to Jackson’s for the men’s group.

The next morning, Gareth was once again first in the clinic, but not far behind him were Janessa and Aria.

“Good morning, ladies,” Gareth said when they joined him in the break room.

“It’s Friday,” Janessa said. “And I’m off tomorrow, so yes, it’s a goooood morning.”

“Ready for your second day on the job, Aria?” he asked as he lifted the mug he’d just filled with coffee to take a sip.
