She looked at him with a wry smile. “Are you going to make a wish?”

He frowned. “I don’t understand.”

“Terran tradition of pulling the specific bone of one type of bird after it has been cooked and consumed, and the person who gets the larger portion gets to make a wish.” She chuckled. “I have never had a wish come true.”

He brushed his lips against hers. “We will get into that later because you are already my wish, and I want to return the favour.”

His hands relaxed, and he let his digits trail through the silky locks before he settled the bill with the desk.

He returned to her side, and she said, “Hey, one of my friends from my world is here.”

“Are they? Male or female?” His tone was calm, but she heard the undertone that surprised her.

“Female. She has a Hmrain with her. Kethen.”

He paused. “Kethen is here?”

“He is. With Janessa. They seem close, though I am pretty sure she isn’t companion class.”

He smiled. “How can you be sure? No one was sure of you.”

“She just wasn’t. It is hard to explain. She’s different now. The way she and Kethen are with each other... there is something there.”

Absently he said, “Kethen is a blood drinker. That is how he forms his link.”

Iris blinked. “I didn’t know that was a thing.”

“There were six Hmrain built that way. It was considered a little too aggressive.”

“But the biting is still there.” She said it with a wry tone.

They had already walked into the mall area of the station and were slowly heading for an area with restaurants.

He chuckled. “The biting is vital. But, I give with my bite, and I only have to do it once. Kethen gives and takes.”

“Oh.” She frowned. “Oh. Is he hurting her?”

“We will have to ask them.”

Iris frowned. “How do we find them?”

He chuckled. “They are over there, at the jeweller. I am assuming that that is your friend?”

Janessa was prodding Kethen in the chest with one hand on her hip, and Kethen had a calm expression on his face. When he reached down and stroked Janessa’s belly, Iris jolted. There was usually only one reason for that particular move. Janessa’s expression softened, and she put her hand on Kethen’s for a moment, then scowled and continued chewing him out.

“She... didn’t say anything.”

“I do not think she had time.”

Kethen shrugged and continued talking to the shop owner.

Yavor and Iris walked across the concourse, and Janessa smiled at her. “Hey, Iris, you look great.”

Iris actually was able to look her up and down, and she said, “I didn’t see the hair banding or that your hair was butt length or that you are housing another person.”

Janessa paused, and she slumped. Kethen caught her with one arm and finished his transaction.

“Yup. We are doing our final rounds before we settle back at home, and I am swarmed by the staff again. They are very intense, and I just wanted some fresh air before I ended up locked up. So, Kethen agreed to not chuck me out of his ship when I stowed away.”
