"All right," she said, unconvinced.

"Bye, Mykie," he said softly, stopping in his tracks in the hallway. "It was really nice talking to you."

Mykie tilted her head, unable to keep the silly grin off her face. "Likewise. I'm glad I stopped in the middle of work for you. Hopefully, we can talk again like this, and I can see more of your art."

Corbus nodded, and a few seconds later, the call was dropped. Mykie closed her eyes with a sigh, the silly grin still on her lips. Corbus was definitely one of the good things that came out of the night before. Her thoughts started to wonder about the other two good things that came out of the night before she had to shake them away. The boys would still be there after she was done with the work behind her.

At least, she hoped they'd still be around once the job was done.

Mykie-Fever

She looked at her computer in front of her, but she couldn’t help but let that voice in her head run circles as she thought about the girl on the other side of the phone.

Who was she?

Whatwas she to them?

She pushed herself back from the desk and walked out to the living room, disappointed when she saw that Jezebeth wasn’t on the couch anymore. The lights were all off except for the light that shining out from under her bedroom door. With a quick knock on her bedroom and a quick call to come in, she braced herself for what she was about to do.

Was she really going to get advice from Jezebeth? Was she really that desperate?

Jezebeth was already changed into her pajamas, and Mykie breathed a sigh of relief when it wasn’t her sleeping in her bra and underwear or worse—naked. She made that mistake twice, once when Jezebeth was going to bed and another when she had a “friend” over.

“What’s up?” Jezebeth asked from her seat in front of her vanity. She was wiping her makeup off her face, but Mykie knew she was paying attention to her through the mirror.

She crawled onto Jezebeth’s bed and sat down with her legs crossed. She remembered sitting here a ton of nights talking all they could about school drama. While Jezebeth was older than her, Mykie was still finishing up her senior year when she joined the Cantil. As the only girls around their age in the Cantil at the time, they were drawn toward each other. It wasn’t long before she moved in with Jezebeth after meeting Dexter. Jezebeth was like an older sister to her; one that everyone she brought around wanted to be with, as soon as they met her.

“Corbus video-chatted me…” Mykie started.

“Have I met Corbus?” Jezebeth asked, still rubbing at her concealer. “I want to picture the face that I’m about to verbally destroy if he did something to you.”

“No!” Mykie waved her hands. “He didn’t do anything…I think. He’s very sweet, actually. He lives with Renly though and—”

“And they got into a fight about you?” she supplied.

“No! I just heard something in the back of video that I didn’t like,” Mykie said, crossing her arms.

“Like what? A dog? Bad taste in music? Children?” She was wiping her eyes now, but in no way did Jezebeth’s attention steer away from watching her in the mirror.

“Close. I heard a woman’s voice. Yelling at Renly, I think,” Mykie stated.

Jezebeth put down her wet wipe and turned around in her seat until she was facing Mykie.

“No, hedidn’t,” she said, her eyebrows risen.

“I think hedid,” Mykie cried, putting her face in her hands. “Who else could it have been? His mom?”

Jezebeth smirked. “No one has his mom coming over to his house this late at night, especially if you have a couple of roommates.”

Mykie flopped back on her bed and groaned. “I’m such an idiot, aren’t I? I’m involved with a married man.”

“Sweetie, it could be worse. He could behappilymarried. Been there, done that. Almost got him to sign the divorce papers and add me to the will, too.”

“Jezebeth, this isn’t a time to joke! What am I supposed to do?”

“I say you keep going. Maybe you heard the situation wrong. I’d keep my eye out for a ring or an indication of a girl, though,” she said with a shrug, taking her earrings out one by one.

Mykie nodded, but shrugged. “Maybe you’re right, but like you said. Who else would be there, if they’re not a girlfriend of one of them?”
