“I’m perfectly okay with the bedroom and feel ready for the mission. Any pointers?”

Cohen seemed to think it over for a few seconds but then shook his head. “Not really. You have good instincts. So follow them.”

Nodding, we drifted off into silence as we relaxed. It felt like no time had passed when Milo poked his head out, holding up his phone.

“Thirty-minute warning.”

With that, Cohen and I stood, heading to finish getting dressed. It was time to find out if we were Order material or not.

Sittingin the van running surveillance was boring, especially with Guzman as my companion. My fingers itched to do more, my leg bouncing up and down while I scanned footage. I’d been honest earlier when I said I was okay with staying back; it had made the most sense. But doing it sucked monkey balls.

The need to be the one on the front line coursed through me and I wondered if I had control issues. My brother seemed to think so. He reminded me every time I took over any event, deeming his skills lacking. Okay, maybe he had a point. But it didn’t mean I was wrong about his ribbon curls.

Snorting, I focused back on the screen, knowing I needed to be the best lookout for Milo and Asa. Lord knew Guzman wasn’t going to do it. He was currently crunching some chips and watching golf on ESPN. I wouldn’t let us fail because I was bored… Okay, jealous. I didn’t like being the lookout. There, I’d said it.

“How’s it looking, Oblivion?” Cohen asked, using my code name over the comms, ignoring Guzman. Ryker had developed the app we’d used years ago into a more sophisticated one. With Bluetooth and smartwatches, it was practically seamless now.

“Clear so far. They’ve moved into position.”

“Good, keep me updated.” I could hear the apprehension in his voice, and I knew he at least understood how I was feeling. He hated being left behind to watch from the sidelines.

I zoomed in as I watched the three approaching the fire escape. Asa stayed back, manning surveillance from the ground as Milo and Nicole began to climb up. There was an air vent there where they were going to gain access, and shimmy their way down into the bakery. The place had been closed for an hour, and there hadn’t been any movement or light since, giving them a fair chance at not running into anyone.

“We’ve made it to the roof,” Nicole said, coming over the comms, slightly out of breath. I switched one of my screens to get a better view, keeping Asa on another. My heart rate started to increase as I watched them, worry for their well-being overcoming me. I couldn’t lose them.

Keeping my eyes peeled, I watched as Milo and Nicole opened the vent and put on the rappelling equipment before shimmying down. Their helmets had mini cameras, so I turned them on, finding them as they began to descend into the bakery.

“Holy shit. I didn’t think things like this existed,” Nicole said, tilting her head down to show us.

Red lasers spread across the room. This bakery had better security than most banks.

“Um, Chaos,” I said, switching comms so the team wouldn’t hear. “We might have a problem.”

I sent him the live feed, his curse letting me know he got it.

“Shit. This wasn’t in our surveillance.”

“What do we do?” I asked, keeping my gaze focused on Nicole.

“Unless the book is out in the open and one of you is a gymnast, I don’t think you’re prepared to disable that type of security.”

I could hear the disappointment in his voice, and I wondered what it meant for The Order. But I couldn’t think that way. This was real; I wouldn’t leave my teammates in a bad situation. Switching back to Nicole, I knew what I needed to do.

“Okay, guys, I just need a few minutes to see if I can disable it. Are you okay with hanging there for a few minutes? Maybe see if you can spot the book?”

“Yeah, sure,” Nicole said, and I minimized the camera screen. If Guzman was reliable, I’d have him monitor them, but since he was currently snoring, I didn’t feel like putting my faith in him. I’d just have to be quick.

Pulling up the security system website, I cracked my knuckles as I logged in. Cohen had given me one of the most advanced encryption keys earlier, so I was eager to play with it. I just needed to get around the interface and firewall.

Quicker than I thought possible, I made it past the mainframe and began to scroll through the accounts. Earlier, we’d found one, and I disabled it, but this had to be separate since the lasers were still lighting up the room.

Everything had been in a woman’s name so far, and I realized that was our mistake. For the legal stuff, it was all in her name. But I bet these lasers weren’t on the business plan or budget proposal. No, these were paid with a different account and books, since that was what they protected.

Looking at the file, I found the man’s name—Frankie Jacks.
