The door opens. “Alice, I don’t know what I—”

He stops talking. My body shudders with my silent crying. Navarone walks to my bed, takes off his boots and drops them on the floor. He lifts the covers and gets in bed with me, pulling my trembling body against his. I close my eyes, clutching my hand, his face disappears into my hair. He is still fully dressed but presses his warm body against me, and his heartbeat thunders through my chest.

I open my eyes, trying to shake the memories I struggled so hard to forget. He shifts so his crotch isn’t pressing against my back, and my breath hitches. And it hurts. It burns having him lying next to me again, knowing how we were together. Knowing this isn’t going to last, like it never has.

“I’m so sorry, babe,” he whispers in my ear. “I’ve never forgiven myself, and I never will. That’s not what I’m here for.”

Turning around I press my forehead to his, and let out a deep sigh. Navarone’s eyes are closed. My fingers touch his temple, and he opens them. His dark gaze roams over my face. I cup his jaw, brushing his hair back. He still looks like the boy I used to love lying next to me like this. The butterflies are back, the same ones that always accompany me whenever I’m near him. I try to fight the threatening waterworks. Reaching out, he brushes away the escaping tears running down my cheeks.

“Please, Allie, let me stay here,” he whispers, “for tonight.”

“Only tonight,” I whisper, laying my head against his chest, feeling myself drifting off to sleep while he holds me like he once did.
