Page 46 of Make It Burn

My stomach flutters, hearing those words. Brushing my hair back, I look at my brothers and father sitting on the couch talking to each other. “A bag?”

“Yeah, I talked to Jack. Don’t worry. He knows all about me wanting to take you on a trip for your birthday.”

I squeal with delight. “What should I bring?” I ask, feeling excited.

“Everything.”

“Can’t believe you’re taking me on a trip.”

“Better believe it. We’re leaving right after the show.” Someone is calling his name. “Babe, I have to go. See you in an hour.”

I say goodbye and hang up before looking at my dad and brothers’ smiling faces.

“You assholes knew all along he was taking me on a trip.” I jump up and down.

“That’s right, Squirrel,” Dad says.

I fall into his arms and hug him before running into my tiny closet of a room and packing my bag. I haul it out into the living room after throwing everything I have in there.

“Dude, looks like you’re going away on tour for months,” Gunner says, motioning to my suitcase.

Axl grins, lighting up a cigarette and putting his feet on the coffee table. Dad rolls his eyes and pushes his feet away, motioning that he should smoke the cigarette outside on the back porch. With some muffled swearing, Axl slides the door open to listen in on our conversation.

“I don’t know how long I’m going to be away for; a girl has to be prepared.” I wink at Gunn.

Gunner shivers. “Don’t talk to me about being prepared. I still picture you playing with those pink My Little Pony shits.”

Dad gives him a look Gunner ignores, poking his tongue against his cheek.

I salute him with my middle finger.

“Hey, guys, be nice to each other. Show the love, my little degenerates,” Dad says, laughing at his own joke.

Gunner nudges him. “Dad, you need to have the sex talk with her.”

Axl stamps out his cigarette and walks back in, closing the sliding door behind him. “Yeah, Dad,” he states, sitting on the couch next to Gunner.

I cover my eyes with my hands. “Please, guys, not the talk.”

Dad walks over to the closet and opens a drawer, takes out a pack of condoms and throws it my way. Catching it midair, I look at the Trojans in my hands, feeling my cheeks flame.

“You take it out and put it on. Should I get a banana?” Gunner roars with laughter. Axl punches him in the shoulder. “Ow. Relax, will ya? I’m joking.”

Dad points to Gunner. “I’ll deal with you later, smartass.”

He walks over to me and lays his hands on my shoulders. “Darling, you know what we talked about.”

After Dad had seen Navarone leave my room back in California when he’d been smoking on the porch at five in the morning, he took me aside. Dad has never been afraid to talk about sex with us. Guess the hippie in him always made it much easier to ask questions, and for us not to feel judged or be weirded out like most kids get when they talk to their parents about sex.

“Don’t do anything you’re not comfortable with, honey. I trust you to make the right decisions, but I know how we men get,” he tells me before looking at my brothers, who pretend to be busy, staring at the wall in front of them.

“Say it, Dad. We think with our dicks more than our other head,” Gunner says, before he waggles his eyebrows.

Axl slaps the couch cushion in Gunner’s face. “Shut up.”

I ignore them.

“Thanks, Dad. And I will.” Smiling, I put the condoms in my bag.
