We both grin at each other, not letting go. He takes a deep breath before looking into my eyes again. “Will you marry me?” he says.

I gasp when it hits me; has he asked me to marry him or is that the alcohol talking?

He kisses my hand before laying it on his heart. “I’ve loved you ever since you stepped out of that beat-up truck in California. You are my best friend, Al. You light up my world. I want to spend the rest of my time figuring out life together. You make me want to be a better man.” Taking another deep breath, he gets down on his knee, and with a slow smile warming his face, he says, “I love you. What do you say?”

Smiling, he gets up, and I kiss him, promising to love him. “Yes. I’ll marry you.”

He traces my lips with his shaking fingers, his eyes shining. He lifts me off my feet and spins me around before his hand disappears into his jeans pocket, and he pulls out a silver wedding band.

He takes my left hand in his as the band starts playing again. “I know it’s not a big rock, but I had it engraved. And I thought ... well, I think ...”

“I love it,” I tell him, tears filling my eyes as he slips the ring on my finger.

He kisses me again.

“What does it say?” I ask, looking at the delicate silver.

“I will always love you.” His eyes mist up a little.

I try to hold back my tears.

“Don’t cry, babe,” he mumbles, brushing away the tears with his thumbs. “I know how much you love Dolly Parton, and you always listen to that song.”

“It’s perfect,” I tell him.

He sighs with relief. “Good. For a minute there, I thought I screwed up. It’s bound to happen with me. You know that, right?”

“I do,” I say, holding his intense stare. “But, Rone, you make me happy.” Tears stream over my cheeks. “You’ve given me courage; you believe in me. Your love has set me free. Damn, I love you so much.”

He grins because I never curse. I like that I still surprise him.

Picking me up again, he holds me tight against his chest, kissing me hard. “Wanna get out of here?” He beams, taking out a wad of cash before dropping it on the table.

“Let’s go,” I say, clutching his hand and intertwining our fingers.

We grab a taxi after we make a pit stop at the local liquor store, buying some tequila and whiskey to celebrate with later, we stop in front of the famous white chapel. I hesitate before opening the car door, damn shouldn’t my brothers and my Dad be here tonight? Or would they talk me out of it? A calm washes over me, because I know I want this, like I’m going to love him for the rest of my life.

“No second thoughts?” he asks as we step through the chapel doors.

“Never,” I say without a doubt in my voice, kissing him again.
