I don’t know what I expect to find. I read enough to imagine it being some kind of fight-meets-strip club, and some illegal underground facility where they plot to overtake the government. Inside, it is nothing like I thought it would be, but even bigger than I imagined. A bar sits immediately on the left. Pool tables and old couches are on either side of the room with chairs and tables scattered around, and two jukeboxes are in the far right corner because apparently one isn’t enough.

There are a couple of women behind the bar, cleaning and tidying up or handing out drinks. They don’t look so scary. More like they belong, wearing the same vests as some of the guys walking around. Others are sitting, talking to each other while Led Zeppelin plays in the background.

No one really notices me. Some nod, but most continue shooting pool or carrying on with their conversations. It’s so not like the gatherings I’ve read about. Sure, it’s a Monday evening, but still.

I get more anxious as the seconds tick by. I follow Animal across the room to a long hallway.

The guy stops in front of a nondescript door and knocks.

“Zombie?”

“What?” the voice on the other side asks. Do I recognize that tone?

“You busy?” Animal says, and opens the door, motioning with his chin to let me know it’s okay for me to enter. I do, and he slams it shut behind me.

The big handsome man sitting behind an old wooden desk glances up from the files he’s reading.

He pushes his chair back, brushing one hand through his short dark hair, taking his glasses off, and smiling like he recognizes me. I squeeze my eyes shut for a moment, relaxing when clear blue eyes stare back at me, the same shade as the eyes on the man I’m falling in love with.

He points to a chair across from his desk and chuckles. “Take a seat, kid.”

Damn it. What have I gotten myself into?
