After knocking, I wait for a couple of seconds.

There’s no answer. The shower is still running and I don’t care; I’m done with her ignoring me. Opening the door, I walk to her bathroom, slamming my fist on the wooden door.

“Sky,” I yell, waiting for her to say something. “You know you almost burned the damned house to the ground.”

I punch my fist against the frame again, making it rattle. Still, she says nothing. I’m getting angrier by the second.

“You know what could have happened?”

“Go away, Hunter.” She sounds different, like she’s been crying.

“Sky, what the hell is going on?” I roar.

She sniffles. “Go away,” she cries.

I try the door handle. “Open up,” I order, raising my voice.

“No, leave me alone.”

“Open the damn door or I’m coming in,” I bellow, waiting for her response, my heart breaking from her sobbing. “That’s it.”

I put my full weight against the door, and force it open. The bathroom is filled with steam. “How long have you been in here?” I raise my voice and open a window. “Sky, what are you doing?”

“Go away, Hunter,” she sobs.

I try not to look, but when I do, she is sitting in the corner of the shower, her hair plastered in wet streaks against her face. She holds her legs against her stomach. Her eyes are bloodshot red.

“Get up,” I order her with menace in my voice.

“No.” She shakes her head, not letting go of her legs.

“We need to talk about what happened. We can’t keep doing this. Fuck, I can’t keep doing this. I’m not letting you go. You are not going to push me away. I won’t let you,” I tell her.

“Will you just go, Hunter. Leave me alone.” Her voice is weak.

“No,” I bark, slamming my hand against the wall. “You are going to tell me what the fuck is going on.” I grab a towel. “Get out of the shower,” I tell her, holding it in front of me.

“No, I can’t.” Her voice breaks.

“What do you mean ‘I can’t’? Come on, get up,” I say, losing steam.

Her body shakes, and her teeth are clattering.

“I can’t.”

“What do you mean?” My voice loses all its anger and I kneel so we’re at eye level. I don’t gape at her naked body; I hold her stare and seeing her like this pains me to the core.

“I can’t, okay? I cannot move my legs.” The panic in her voice tears me in two.

“What?” I don’t understand.

“I can’t move my legs,” she screams, her eyes wide. “Hunter, my legs,” she sobs, pain underlying each word. “I can’t move them. I can’t.” She hiccups and starts to hyperventilate.

Without thinking, I take off my dirt-bike boots and step into the shower with my clothes still on. I crouch beside her, tucking the wet strands of hair behind her ears. “Breathe, honey. Look at me,” I say. She relaxes slowly as my hands travel over her arms while the warm water cascades over our bodies.

“Sky, come on, get up. I won’t be angry if you smoked too much,” I say, my voice soft. “I shouldn’t be a hard-ass about that shit. Hell, a joint was my best friend not so long ago.”

Her legs are shaking. What is happening to her? I never experienced anything like this when I used. She gazes up at me with vacant big eyes. It fucking scares me.
