Present day

Sky

Iwake, slowly opening my eyes and scanning the room. I don’t recognize anything. I don’t know where I am.

Then I hear the buzzing noises all around me, footsteps of people walking in the hallway. Slowly, I try to flex my fingers, focusing on the beeping of the machines hooked up to me.

I’m in a hospital bed. Hunter is holding my hand and sleeping next to me, his head on my shoulder. Brushing my hand through his dark hair, I watch him. Judging by his stubble, he hasn’t shaved in days. The piercings are all gone.

Drew and Dad are dozing on a couch under the window. I smile. I’m not alone; they didn’t leave me. The tiny oxygen tube in my nose tickles, making it easier for me to breathe.

“Hey,” I whisper, my voice hitching in my throat as Hunter opens his eyes. He has dark circles under them, like he hasn’t slept.

“Babe?” he chokes. He kisses my forehead. “We thought we lost you.”

“I’m still here,” I tell him. My voice sounds funny.

Dad rushes to my side, and Drew gives me a sad smile. “I’ll let the nurse know she’s awake,” he says, and leaves us alone. I grab my throat, looking between Hunt and my dad.

“They had you sleeping for days, does it hurt?” Dad asks.

“Yeah,” I whisper.

“They needed to put a tube in your throat to help you breathe,” he croaks.

I nod, focusing on Hunter, whose eyes are as red as my dad’s.

“What happened?” My voice is brittle.

Jay takes my other hand. “You…”

The door opens and a doctor walks in with Drew.

“Hi, Sky, I’m Doctor Harper. I need a couple minutes alone with you to do some tests.” The doctor’s voice is soft.

Dad gives me a reassuring nod.

“I’m not leaving her,” Hunter says, matter-of-fact.

“It’s okay, Hunter,” I rasp, trying to plead with my eyes.

He focuses his steely gaze on the doctor then kisses my cheek. His warm breath against my cold skin feels like heaven. “I’ll be outside.” He clears his throat. “I love you. Don’t you forget,” he whispers in my ear, his face wet from his tears.

“I love you too.”

Hunter

I walk out of the room and hold onto the wall for support.

“Shall I get you a coffee?” Jay asks.

I nod. “Thanks. I’m going out for a smoke. Catch you in a couple,” I grumble.

Drew takes my hand. “Need anything else?”

“Some air,” I tell him. He flashes me a soft smile and follows Jay.

I watch them walk down the hall. Timothy pushes off the wall and joins them, draping his arm around Drew’s neck.
