He eyes me and I don’t blink. “If Drew made you talk to me, you can take your story and sell it somewhere else, like your fucking dope,” I tell him, motioning to the door.

“Do you have a problem with my chosen profession, or is it me in general,” he jokes, spreading out his arms.

I flip him off. “Eat shit and die, fuckwad.” I manage to growl, but I smile anyway.

“Right back at you,” he grins.

“I recognize the look in your eyes, Hunter. I see it each day when I stare at my reflection in the mirror.” Timothy blows out the smoke in tiny rings. He sits forward, resting his elbows on his knees. The hardness returns to his features. “I …”

Immediately, I sit up straight. “Man, is Drew okay?”

He chuckles when I mention Drew’s name, shaking his head repeatedly. “I know what you’ve done for Drew over the years,” he answers with love in his voice.

“Yeah, well, he’s my best friend.”

“I know everything, and I owe you for taking care of him. For protecting him when scumbags tried to beat him up.” His strong voice skips a beat.

I scratch my stubble. “You would have done the same.”

He nods. “I probably would have ended them.”

“I don’t question that you would.”

A slight smirk seems to tug on his lips. “You are not the man I thought you were.”

“Hell, most of the time I don’t know who the fuck I am, so get in line.” I grin. “Want something real to drink?” I ask, standing.

He eyes his coffee. “Sure, what do you have?”

I open a couple of kitchen cabinets, scanning the shelves for a bottle. “Jack?”

“Sure, Hunter.”

I hand him a glass. He drowns one quarter of it before he looks at me again. “I didn’t come here to talk about Drew.”

“Oh no?” I ask, finishing my coffee.

“Sky asked me for something.” He downs his drink and pours himself another, finishing it too.

My eyebrows immediately shoot up.

“If you’re going to punch me, I have to tell you Drew likes this face.”

I grunt, rolling my eyes. “What did she ask you?”

“You are acquainted with my former line of business, aren’t you?”

“Former?” I ask, sarcasm ringing through my voice.

“Well, I have turned over all my contacts to new distributors, so yeah, I’d say I’m retired. Been starting up a legitimate business with the help of a guy from Nashville.”

“You know, John Wick said the same thing,” I joke.

He chuckles, but his smile falls. “She asked me if I could help her kill herself.”

“She fucking did what?” I growl, flinging the table between us through the air before I grab the motherfucker by the throat and push him up against the wall, ready to kill the son of a bitch. “And what did you tell her?” I belt out.

Drew busts through the door. “Hunter, let him go,” he roars, stepping over the broken glass.
