My hands start to sweat, and something swells inside me that I haven’t experienced for eight long years. Something I’ve longed for again, but thought would never happen after losing Sky.

I read somewhere the heart will always want more even if there is nothing left to give. Sky made me reach for something. Something I thought would never be in the cards for me. Not once, and certainly not twice in my fucked up life.

“What?” Quinn asks, tucking her red hair behind her pierced ear. I swallow hard. She smiles even wider, blushing a little. “Hunter, why are you looking at me like that?”

I glance over at the track. Cody grins at me. I give him a chin-tip he returns. He knows what I’m about to say.

Reaching out, I take her hand in mine.

“Hunter.” She frowns, cocking her head.

“Honey, I know we’ve known each other for over ten years now.” My voice shakes. Her green eyes calm me. I take a deep breath before I continue. “You have stayed with me at my worst, and when I tried to be my best. And you were there for me after Sky died.”

She closes her eyes for a brief moment. She blinks back her tears, and locks her gaze on me.

“You never asked for more than I could give. You have been my best friend. You held me when I cried, when I relapsed, and when the darkness took over. And you forgave me when I took it out on you,” I tell her.

“Hunter,” she whispers.

“No, Quinn. Let me say this before the lump in my throat chokes me.”

She swallows hard, holding my hand, tracing little circles with her fingers over my knuckles and across my free tattoo.

“I don’t know when it happened but I fell in love with you. And I think you somehow always loved me, through all the hills of my life,” I say. She nods, smiling up at me. “You know I gave a piece of my heart to her, but I’m asking you right here, right now—damn, this is going to sound fucking lame.” I chuckle and she does the same. “I wanted to ask you if I could give this other piece to you?” My hand moves over my heart.

She bites her lip, her eyes hazy with unshed tears.

“Fuck, I’m not really great at these grand gestures. What I’m asking is …” I take a deep, shuddering breath. “… would you like to spend the rest of our lives together? Will you marry me?”

She reaches up and traces the line of my jaw, her fingers running through my short hair.

“I thought you’d never ask,” she says, grinning.

I burst out laughing. “The worst line ever, isn’t it?”

Winking, she stands on her tiptoes, her plump lips inches away from my own. “The worst,” she says, beaming up at me.

“I knew it.” I hold her against my chest, my hand travels into her hair. “Are you going to kiss me now, woman?” My voice is thick with emotion.

She nods. “I plan to kiss you for the rest of our lives.”

“Fuck, that is way better than what I said.” I bite on my lip.

Quinn laughs. She touches my cheek, and I know this is not the end of my story, this is only the beginning, and I have her to thank for it.

There isn’t going to be a day I won’t stare at a sunset and see Sky’s face in the bright colors. Sky opened up my heart so I could walk this road with someone who loves me for who I am, the man I was, and the man I’m going to be in the future.

“I know it won’t be easy, but, Hunter, I love every part of you. The parts you were with her and the parts you are going to be with me.”

My lips find hers, and I lose myself in our embrace. Applause breaks out, and someone whistles from the track. Quinn chuckles.

“Those would be your boys,” she snickers.

I flip them off, and yell at them to get a damn move on. It’s followed by more laughing.

“Teenagers,” I say, smiling, caressing her cheek and sliding my thumb back and forth over her bottom lip.

“I love you, Hunter. I’ve always loved you and I always will,” she whispers.
