She flashes me a beautiful smile. “Screw you,” she says, locking eyes with me again.

“Is that a promise?”

She tries to stand, but I grab her hand, she fucking lets me, and after a deep sigh lays her head against my shoulder.

Stretching my legs out in front of me, I expel a long breath. Without really thinking it through I grab the back of her head pulling her face toward me, touching her heated cheek with the tips of my fingers. “Tell me what I can do to make it better?” I ask, wiping the moist from under her eyes. She’s an inch away from my parted lips. I smile and a tremor runs through her. I love the fact I get to her.

“You’re doing it.”

“I’m sorry for telling you to basically fuck off when you first got here.”

“I know why you did it,” she says.

“Why?”

“For Jay,” she smiles.

“I know you’re leaving in a couple weeks, Shorty,” I say. Fuck, why is my mind going here? Why do I want her, when everything tells me to back the fuck off, before I ruin everything I built? Even Jay warned me not to get involved with her. “Why not have a good time together, just friends?” my voice hopeful, as I slide the pad of my thumb over the curve of her bottom lip.

“I…I,” she whispers. With her flushed cheeks and wide-eyed stare, a low growl escapes from my lips, I can’t fucking help it. I let my gaze drift down to her nipples; they are poking against the tight fabric of her dress. I flash her a pained smile.

She places her hand on my thigh, her nails disappear into my leg, and I get hard instantly. I need to bite back a groan. Fuck, my dick hurts from pressing against the zipper of my jeans.

“Hunter,” she whispers, never taking her eyes away from mine.

“It would be fun, you and I,” I say in her ear. I don’t know who I’m trying to convince here.

“I don’t doubt it.” She stiffens but relaxes as I start to move my fingers through her thick hair, touching the back of her neck. She closes her eyes as I move my lips over her cheekbone to the corner of her upturned mouth.

“But I don’t know if I can.” She clutches my thigh with her hand, and I swear to God, I get hard to the point of combusting. I need to stay away from her; my relationships never last longer than a couple hours between the sheets. She’s not the kind of girl you spend only one night with. Something tells me once you do, you want to wake up every morning with her sleeping next to you.

Leaning forward, I rest my forehead against hers, still holding her firmly in place. I feel my dick throbbing. I thought this only happened in sappy romance novels and shit, not in fucking real life. I rub my nose against hers ever so slowly, scenting her. Her warm breath on my lips shoots ripples of pleasure through me.

She opens her eyes, and I can only stare as she places her hand on my chest and my heart rate kicks up like I’ve run forty miles straight. Her touch is a bolt of electricity coursing through my body, lighting everything in its path, even my fucking cold heart.

“Hunter,” she breathes. Her eyes burn through me and it’s too much. She opens and closes her fingers, taking a deep, shuddering breath. “You don’t want me,” she whispers.

I pull away, letting her go, knowing where a kiss with her could lead. She drops her hand from my chest and keeps staring at me.

“Sometimes a mistake is the best thing that can happen to you,” I tell her, my voice challenging.

“And sometimes it can destroy you,” she counters.

“You promise, Shorty?”

She purses her lips together. “You’re nothing like I expected.”

Gazing out to the ocean, I ask, “What did you expect?”

“I might have checked you out online,” tiny crinkles appear at the corners of her eyes. Like she knows how much I crave the attention, the validation.

“You did?” I ask, trying not to sound too smug.

A slow smile spreads across her face. “Lose your cocky smirk, Hunt. I shouldn’t have said anything to blow up that already inflated ego of yours.”

I dig my fingers in the sand as I lean forward, and a couple strands of hair fall in front of my eyes. “And did you like what you saw, or is the real version even better?”

She shakes her head. “You really don’t have an off switch, do you?”
