“Yeah, I’m fine,” I hope the smile I give him is a little braver than I feel.

“Are we expecting company?” Hunter asks, motioning to the black matte Tesla making its way up the drive.

Drew shakes his head. “No,” he murmurs, taking out his phone and scrolling through his messages. “No, nothing today.”

The car stops next to the house and Tim steps out. I can’t believe he’s really here.

“Tim,” I yell, closing the distance between us with a couple unsteady steps.

Spotting me, a look of concern crosses his face before his smile turns electric, and he heads in our direction.

“Honey.” He kisses my cheek, and takes me into his arms, spinning me around. I close my eyes for a second, nausea hitting me like a tidal wave. Letting me go, he wipes my hair out of my face. “How are you feeling?” he asks.

“I missed you,” I whisper, not wanting to answer his question.

“Me too,” he says. Still holding his hand, I turn around. “This is Tim,” I tell Drew, who followed me to greet my best friend. Drew keeps staring at him with his mouth slightly open.

“Hi man,” Tim says, holding out his hand for Drew to shake. Drew’s momentarily speechless.

“Drew,” he finally answers, swallowing hard.

“I know,” Tim replies, giving him a devastatingly handsome smile, and Drew actually blushes.

“This must be Hunter,” Tim says, turning to him. “Nice to meet you, dude.”

“Likewise.” Hunter’s deep voice rolls over me. Although his jaw twitches, and the look in his eyes hardens, sizing up Tim.

“Hey, Hunt,” my father says, walking up to us, “we ain’t done yet.” Jay’s eyes light up as if he recognizes Tim.

“Jay, this is Tim, my best friend from New York.”

Both men shake hands. “Glad to finally meet you in person.”

Tim nudges me in the shoulder. “Don’t look so surprised, honey. I talked to Jay last night. Had to make sure you were doing okay.”

A soft chuckle comes out of Jay. I narrow my eyes at him, then at my traitor of a best friend, and get two winks from both in return.

“It’s only been a couple days, Timothy,” I huff.

“I couldn’t stay away,” he says, kissing my temple.

“Do you have a place to crash?” I ask, looking up into his grey eyes.

“Yeah, I’m renting a house not far from here at the beach,” he says, locking eyes with Drew, whose cheeks turn an even deeper shade of red.

“That’s awesome,” Drew responds.

“If you like, you can come check it out. Sky told me you guys all love to surf.”

“I’d love to,” Drew almost yells. Hunter and I chuckle. It’s like looking at a cartoon while hearts float above their heads.

“We’ll be done with training in an hour. Do you want to stay for dinner, Tim?” Jay asks.

“Thanks, Jay, I’d love that.”

“D-oo you w-want a tour of the p-lace?” Drew asks, stumbling over his words.

“Sure,” Tim answers. He squeezes my hand, leaving me alone with Hunter while he and Drew head back to the track with my father.
