Taking me into his arms, he crushes me against his big body. “I love you, kiddo,” he repeats, while I bury my head in his chest.

He kisses my forehead, a sob escapes him, and I tell him, “It will be all right, Jay.”

“You need to be honest with Hunter. This is not some Nicholas Sparks movie.” Jay sounds exhausted.

I smile. “You know who Nicholas Sparks is?”

He blushes. “I read every once in a while,” he says. “Please. Me and Drew are going to San Diego to meet a couple sponsors. Take the time to talk to Hunter.” Tears shine in his eyes when he stops talking. Grabbing the chair for support, he shakes his head.

“It will all work itself out,” I say.

He shakes his head, adjusting his black cap. “Don’t make the same mistakes I made. I love you,” he whispers, kissing my hair.

I close my eyes and hug him, “I love you too, Dad,” I tell him, and for the first time since I came back, I’m truly home.

An hour later, I watch him and Drew get the truck ready. Leaning against the porch railing, I wave at them as the car drives away.

Timothy picks me up later that evening, and I spend the night with him, watching movies and eating junk food. I know I need to talk with Hunter when I get back. I need to tell him the truth. I need to give him the chance to walk away.

And I’m so angry, angry knowing what’s to come. I’m angry I have another reason for wanting to stay, and I blame Hunter for it, for everything.
