“Thank you, sir,” Jesse says, standing tall. I know what validation from my father can do to you.

“You have a bright future ahead of you. Whereare you going next?” he asks, sounding truly interested, while my heart is racing. I know for sure this is going to blow up in my face.

“I have a few training sessions planned, and some filming to do in the upcoming weeks,” Jesse tells him.

“If you need any help setting stuff up, let me know, and we’ll deck you out in new shit,” Dad says.

“Thank you, sir.”

I grit my teeth. “Dad…”

He winks at me. “I’ll be at the shop around two tomorrow for that coffee, Ace,” he says, walking back into the house. “Enjoy your medal, kid,” he says, and with another look my way, he heads out.

“What the fuck—” Jesse begins.

“Don’t,” I warn. “I can’t,” I snap, making my way down the stairs leading to the garden below. When my boots touch the snow, he calls my name. The only light is the full moon shining through the Aspen trees, and I want to scream, to run as far away from this beautiful place, like I’ve done the last years.

“Fuck, Ace, wait,” he shouts, following me as I trudge through the snow.

Shaking my head, I don’t stop. I can’t go through this again, always wondering if the mountain is going to swallow him whole, and risk breaking all over again. Because once I do, I might lose all that’s left of my broken heart.
