“Sure.” I watch him putting logs on the crumpled newspapers, his broad, muscular back straining against the dark fabric of his shirt.

“Jesse?”

“Yeah?” He lights a match and the fire gains momentum.

“Why didn’t you tell me about you?” I whisper.

He runs both hands through his hair. “Same goes for you, babe,” he says, plopping down on the comfy rug. I grab my drink and sit down next to him, leaning against the couch, watching the flames grow.

He locks eyes with me. “Fuck, man, I don’t know. Just easier, I guess.” He shrugs.

“Easier?” I mutter, staring into the flames.

“Yeah, like you didn’t tell me your last name is Kurton,” he says, his gaze darting to my face.

“Would it have mattered?”

“No. I still would have fucked you, Ace, just like you told your brother you were doing with me,” he says, sliding over to me. “That shit hurt. But you can kiss my dick later and make it better.”

He turns his head toward me, and I giggle. “Smartass. You’re a really good rider, by the way.”

“Thank you,” he says and keeps looking at me. “Been busting my ass for years, and it’s finally paying off.” He stares at me like he’s seeing me for the first time.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” I ask.

“I hadn’t pictured you as the daughter of a legacy.”

I grunt. “Dad’s crazy stories proceed him.”

“Your brother was one of the best free riders in the world. I know what happened to him, Ace.” His voice is soothing and calm.

I run my fingers over the condensation on the bottle. “I was with him. When it happened, I mean,” I whisper, clearing my throat. He is quiet, waiting for me to continue. “I can’t tell you more, not yet, Jesse,” I say, and my voice trembles.

“I understand, babe. I’ve had some close calls in the past; you’re still dealing with nature. Nothing is ever certain when you’re on a board.” We are both quiet for a while. “I know what it’s like to live your life on a mountain. I’m still here after every stunt I pulled. Tonight, it all came together. I rode better with you there,” he tells me, a small smile playing at his lips.

“You did?” I ask, my heart rate kicking into third gear.

“It was nice to have someone waiting for me at the bottom of the slope. You’ve been on my mind nonstop, but I should tell you, I’m not good at this shit,” he says, taking a deep breath before turning his gaze back to the flames.

“I’ve thought about you too, and I’m not good at this shit either,” I confess, suddenly aware he is only sitting an inch away from me, and he’s draped his arm on the couch behind me.

“I know I’m not the best at deep conversations…” He pauses like he’s searching for words. “I want to get to know you better, not only with my dick, but you. I guess we both have a lot of fucking baggage we keep dragging behind us?”

I can only nod.

“I can’t do boyfriend and girlfriend, babe. I’m gone too long with travel and work, but I do want you.”

“Jesse, you don’t have to explain anything. I’m the same.”

“But is that going to be enough?” he rasps.

“Jesse I—” I don’t know what to tell him. A part of me wants to run away as far away from him as I can, but the other part wants to feel something real again.

“I don’t know. Is it enough for you?” I ask, my voice small.

He turns and grabs the back of my neck, his calloused thumb tracing the line of my throat. I let out a shaky breath. He lowers his eyes and locks them on me.

“Ace.” My name comes out like a plea. “Fuck, I love how I can make you tremble like this, but I know myself, and this is all I can give,” he drawls. “Stay the night with me, Ace. We’ll figure out the rest, okay?”

He presses his lips to mine, and I moan into his mouth. “Okay, snowboard guy.” I let out a shaky breath, loving the way his lips melt against mine.

“Let me fuck you like before,” he groans, pressing his cheek against mine. “Give in to me.”
