“And it’s never enough. No mountain, new terrain, fresh powder, or snowstorm is enough. That’s what I saw while we were watching his movie. He didn’t show me that part of him while we were boarding together, but it’s definitely there. They need to chase the high and—” I say softly.

“We get left behind,” he finishes for me.

“Exactly,” I reply.

“Have you talked to him about it? Does he know?”

A harsh laugh escapes my lips. “You mean about our family? He figured it out. I didn’t tell him right at the start, like he didn’t tell me about being a famous snowboarder. I don’t know where we are going, Layne, but I want to find out. But I also don’t want to scare him away with my baggage.”

“He is one of the best, in the halfpipe and chasing pow all over the world. His movies are epic,” he tells me. “But he’s also just a guy.”

“I never watched any of his films. Before the X Games, I hadn’t even Googled him.”

“Yeah, you should watch those clips before you make up your mind about him.”

“What do you mean?” I ask.

“I know you, sis. When things get hard or too real, you either tackle them head on, or you run as far away as you can.” He chuckles, and I know he’s telling the truth.

“Fuck, you got me,” I say, finishing the rest of my coconut water. We walk back together to the house, and I know we’ll find our way. Our family is still healing and so am I, but this is a start. I say goodbye to Mom and Dad, and promise to pick the bike up later in the week. Layne and Angie drop me off at my apartment after we got all my stuff from the motel. They help me move all my boxes in before I follow them outside.

“Sure you don’t want to come back to our place for a drink?” Layne asks.

“No, I’m okay, guys. I’m gonna head in and crash,” I say, staring at the apartment.

“Call us if you need anything, honey,” Angie says, kissing my cheek before they hop in the truck and drive away.

“I will,” I promise myself and wave at them, walking up the steps to the house, thinking about the snowboarder barreling down the mountains in those videos. I grab my phone and type his name into YouTube, pressing on the first video that pops up. I sit on the steps and stare at the screen. Damn, the guy can snowboard, and he looks hot doing it.

“What ya watching, babe?” a male voice whispers in my ear. I drop my phone, and with ten years of Krav Maga, I take the bastard in a headlock and turn my body so he’s plastered to the stairs under me. I swing my fist back, ready to strike, when Jesse pulls his hoody back.

“Holy shit, Ace of Spades, where the fuck did you learn to do that?” he drawls and waggles his brows.

I push Jesse back by his collar, and he pouts. “We can take it inside. I would love to see more of those moves you got.”

I stand and hold out my hand to help him up. “Never sneak up on me like that again,” I warn and wink. “I was about to sucker punch you in your pretty face.”

“I’m glad you settled on the fact that my face is pretty,” he jokes while I pull him up so he can tower over me with that lopsided grin plastered on his face.

I cross my arms in front of me and look up into his gray eyes. “What are you doing here, Jesse?”

“I hope you… fuck, babe, you know how long it took to track you down?” he drawls, his gray eyes full of mischief.
