“West?” Davenport’s voice filtered through my dark thoughts, and I opened my eyes just as my phone buzzed. I looked down at the words, reading them three times before they finally made sense in my head.

Tory:I’m fine, not kidnapped, not dead in a ditch. I just need to get out on my own. I’m sorry.

“West?” Davenport called again. I looked up. The steward had backed off and was giving me worried looks. I figured one more outburst would have him trip some alarm and I’d be arrested for harassing airport staff. In fairness to him, he was probably right to. I sighed and handed the phone to Davenport.

“We’re too late, she’s gone.”

“Shit.” Davenport looked up. “Now what?”

I took my phone back and handed him our expense credit card. “The next flight to Cairo leaves in five hours. Book us two tickets. We’re going after her.” Davenport took the card and moved back towards the escalators. I followed behind, lifting my phone to my ear and wincing slightly as a familiar deep voice answered on the third ring.

“West? Checking in?”

“Yes, my lord, only... I’m sorry, but I am afraid I have some rather frustrating news...”
