“Hardly appropriate, considering all we are to her is her protection detail.”

I rolled my eyes. “That’s not all we are to her, so stop talking shit.”

“It is all we are to her right now, and we need to remember that. Don’t look for more than there is. She doesn’t remember us yet, and when she does—”

“When she does, it’s going to be confusing as hell, and she could do with knowing we’ve got her back,” I snapped. West might be my superior, but we’d known each other a long time, and I was done taking shit from him.

“She knows that already. She knows she can trust us with her life,” West insisted.

“Bollocks,” I answered. “She knows she can trust us to hold her back and keep her in a cage. If you think she looks at us as anything other than prison wardens, you don’t know her at all.”

West’s face darkened. “Then that’s how it has to be. There’s only the two of us guarding her right now, Jack. If we get distracted, you know what happens. Or have you forgotten how we died last time, because I haven’t.”

“Of course I haven’t forgotten, but that doesn’t mean—”

“Yes, it means exactly that. We cannot afford to drop the ball, not this time. Not unless you want to see Tory go through what Juliette did. She doesn’t remember yet, so we keep our position and play our role. When she remembers, then I think it would be best if several of us continued to do exactly that.”

I frowned, really shocked by his statement. “That’s crazy, West. She needs us, all of us.”

“She needs to survive,” West countered darkly.

I opened my mouth to argue again, but at that moment Zayn came back down from the apartment upstairs, having changed from his long robe to more modern dark jeans and a cream polo shirt. His weapons bag was slung over his shoulder, and it looked slightly fuller now. I assumed he’d just stashed his clothes in with the weapons, seeing as we were only planning a quick trip.

“Okay, I’m good to go.”

“Good,” West answered, glancing at his phone. “She’s got a couple of hours’ head start. Let’s hope we’re not too late.”
