“These had been left in the postbox by the front gate. Luckily one of my men intercepted them before your father saw them.”

“So he doesn’t know about these?” I queried, looking through them again.

West reached out and took them from me, pushing them back into the envelope and sliding them into his inside pocket. “He doesn’t. For starters, it shows Wesley and Zayn with us, which would just lead to more questions, and secondly, I thought he was worried enough. But these photos show that someone was following us. They knew every step we took, and I would guess they know who and what we are. And by the delivery method, they also know exactly where you live.”

I sighed. “Anyone with Google knows where I live, West. What do we do? We need to find these people.”

“You need to do nothing, my queen, except let us do our job.”

I nodded. “I understand, and I’m sorry I’ve given you such a hard time in the past, West. Had I known about...”I gestured towards the desk, but he took my hand in his.

“You didn’t know. I wasn’t allowed to tell you, and I respected your father’s reasons for not informing you.”

“Thank you,” I murmured, looking up at him.

He gazed back at me for a moment, the ice in his eyes softening for a second before they hardened. “I am glad you now see what we are dealing with. I think you might find it easier to handle our new security protocols now that you know why we have them.”

I frowned. “New security protocols?”

West nodded. “Now that you have been awakened, your power will draw other supernaturals to you. Some will be friendly, others... will not be.”

“West, we have plenty of security. I can barely move for security officers.”

“We had plenty of mortal security. Now you need magical security.”

I stared at him. “You’re kidding. Magical security?”

“Yes. There are plenty of measures that we can take—magical boundaries and alarms, those kinds of things. I’m not the expert, but there’s quite a lot of magic that we’re capable of.”

I gaped at him. “We? I can do magic too? Apart from the whole shifting into a lion thing?”

“Yes, but I wouldn’t advise trying it until you are properly trained. Magic can backfire badly. I can show you a few things, but I’m not the priest to teach you.”

“Really? Who is?” I asked.

“I don’t know his name in this life. He hasn’t arrived yet. In his past life, his name was Sadiq, but I have no idea when he’ll show up. Sometimes it takes years.”

“How many priests are there, West?” I asked

He looked at me, and a strange smile spread across his face. “As many as you need, my queen. I’m not sure I should tell you. I don’t want to scare you.”

I looked up at him, the obvious thought crossing my mind. “So, there might be more... and would I… would they...”

“The stronger you get, the more power you need, and the more blood you will have to take. Each of your priests is utterly devoted to you, my lady, whether they know it yet or not. We are here to serve your every desire.”

I realised he was still holding my hand as he raised it to his lips. Instead of kissing my fingers, he turned it over and pressed his lips to the inside of my wrist, where my veins ran under my skin. The touch of his mouth sent a shiver through me. His eyes never moved from mine, and blue fire danced in them instead of the usual ice. For a moment, I thought he might kiss me, but he released my hand and stepped back, the mask dropping down over his face.

“I’ve called in some more team members to help staff the grounds. We’ll be patrolling constantly now in shifts. Anytime you go anywhere, there will be four of us with you—”

“Four?” I cut in. “It was bad enough with just you and Jack!”

“Davenport,”he corrected. “And I will not be enough if these people decide to attack. Did you see those photographs, my lady? They were close enough to reach out and touch you. That is not acceptable. We need to keep you safe and out of sight until these people are caught.”

“Whoa...” I stepped back, glaring at him. “Out of sight?”

“You will stay here at the estate until we find out more about this threat. I will not risk taking you out again until I am reassured that we can handle any threat thrown at us. Currently we have four priests and six human security officers. If this is a cult, they will have many, many more than that.”

“No, wait, you said I could go out.”
