I clenched my fists and stepped forward, but he held up his hand.

“You’ve got twenty-four hours to get off my land. If you don’t, if you cause any trouble, it’ll be my daughter who pays the price. Understand?”

I inhaled sharply, the desire to beat the shit out of this creep almost overwhelming my judgment. “If you touch her—”

“No.” I heard a click and looked down. The bastard had a handgun pointed right at my dick. I looked up at him, and he grinned. “I’ll do whatever I damn well please to my daughter. She belongs to me. If you touch her, I can promise you won’t like the consequences.”

“Jophiel, what are you doing up here?” Dylan’s voice came from the doorway, and her father pulled his gun away and grinned at me. He looked up at Dylan. “I’m off. You get yourself inside, my girl, and lock those doors, ya hear?”

She nodded. “Of course, Father.”

He ambled over to his beat-up blue truck and climbed inside. Firing up the engine, he pulled away without a backwards glance, and we watched him drive all the way down the long driveway and onto the main road beyond. Once he was out of sight, Dylan sighed.

“I’m so sorry about him, he’s had a few drinks, and...”

I climbed the steps and pulled her into my arms. “Don’t you apologize for him, and don’t make excuses for him either. He’s an asshole, Dylan, and he treats you like shit.”

She looked down at the porch. “It’s not his fault. I just get it wrong all the time, and I drive him crazy. I never—”

I stopped her by pressing my lips to hers. She hesitated a second then kissed me back. After a moment, I broke away. “No more putting yourself down. I mean it. He’s gone now, and he’ll be out all night, so you don’t even have to let him cross your mind until morning. Think about something more enjoyable than him.”

“Like what?” she asked, looking up at me, her gorgeous mouth curving into a smile.

“Like me,” I replied and kissed her again. I kept it slow until I felt her start to kiss me back, and then I slid my tongue between her lips, exploring her mouth.

Her lips parted, and she moaned quietly. I eased her back until she was pressed up against the porch railing. Her hands slid up my chest, and then she grabbed my shirt, pulling me closer. I pressed myself against her, dropping my hands to her hips to pull her closer. She gasped, but her hips rocked against mine. She’d changed into a button-down cotton dress, and I slid my hands over her ass. In one movement, I gripped her ass and lifted her up onto the railing, parting her legs so I fit perfectly between her thighs. I pressed forward, my cock hard against her core, and she moaned into my mouth. I needed to taste more of her, so I kissed and sucked my way down from her lips to her throat. I felt movement against my chest, and my eyes flew open as Dylan suddenly disappeared from my embrace.

“What the—” I leaned over the railing to see her cradled in Remiel’s arms like a baby. Her mouth was open in surprise, and she had her arms wrapped tightly round Remiel’s neck.

“Did you just steal her from me?” I demanded, heading down the steps in mock outrage. I’d probably be slightly more intimidating without raging hard-on.

Remiel laughed. “We get to share, remember?”

“Not while I’m—”

“Food’s getting cold. They are ready for us,” Remiel interrupted, and I glared at him.

Dylan twisted to look up into his face. “Food?”

“Yep, we’ve got a surprise for you,” I said quickly, not wanting Remiel to steal my thunder.

“For me?” Something crossed her face, and she turned back to Remiel. “Put me down right now, you’ll tear your wound back open again!”

Rem grinned and set her down on her feet, but he kept one of his arms around her shoulders. With the other hand, he lifted his shirt. “All better, no stitches.”

Her eyes widened as she touched the pink mark where Remiel’s wound used to be. “That’s incredible.”

He smiled and dropped the shirt. “Come on then, let’s go. I want dinner!”

As we got nearer to the woods, I took Dylan’s hand. “I hope you like it, it was my idea.”

“Your idea, but you left it to the rest of us to organize!” Eleth complained, appearing out of the trees. He smiled down at Dylan. You look beautiful. May I?”

She nodded, and he reached out and pulled her braid over her shoulder. He tugged out the tie at the end and ran his fingers through her hair until it flowed over her shoulders like a dark stream. He lifted a silky lock to his lips and kissed it, and Dylan giggled.

“Come on. Ade will be wondering where we are.” He turned and led us through the trees to a small clearing. Dylan gasped, and even I was impressed at what they’d done. A fire was roaring away in the center, and old logs had been set around in a circle. They’d taken the blankets from the barn and spread them over the ground, with the cushions off to each side. The picnic I’d thought of was arranged on top, and Dylan looked at me with wide eyes. “You guys did all this... for me?”

Ade stepped forward and ran his finger down one side of her face. “And we’ll keep doing stuff like this until you realize how much you are starting to mean to us, Dylan.”
