“You’re going to get your head in the game and fucking heal her. We can deal with him later,” Ade growled.

“Dylan? Dylan, can you hear me, baby?” Jophiel’s soft voice drifted over me, and I felt his fingertips stroking my hair.

“So... sorry,” I whispered.

“Don’t you dare,” Ade said, his voice sounding strangled. “Don’t you fucking dare. This is not on you.”

I sighed and closed my eyes.

“Dyl?” Jophiel’s tone was panicked, so I forced my eyes open again, even though all I could see was the floor.

“Father told... they are coming...” Pain shot through me, and I sucked in a breath, which caused even more pain around my ribs. My vision darkened, though I could still hear them above me as if they were far away or speaking underwater.

“Joph?”

“I don’t know, I don’t know...” He sounded panicked and unsure, and I’d never heard him like that before. “She’s... Shit, Ade, there’s blood everywhere, and there’s a head wound and that bruising looks like internal bleeding. Ade, I don’t know if I can—”

“Try. Try, Joph, please. This is on us. It’s our fault.”

Joph took a shaky breath, and I felt him lay his hands on my back. Warmth seemed to bloom where he touched and then it spread, lessening the pain a little. Then, it was gone.

“I can’t, I can’t... I’m not strong enough. I need someone stronger. Ade, I can’t save her. God help me, I can’t save her.”

“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” Ade yelled. I heard a crash and realized he’d put his fist through the wall.

“Joph,” I whispered.

“Ade, she’s talking.”

I felt them both move closer, and I tried to speak again, but I could barely breathe. “Air...”

“She can’t breathe. Here, help me turn her over. There’s no injury to her neck.” They lifted me gently, and if I’d had the energy, I would have screamed from the pain as it blazed through my body. Then I was on my back looking up at them in the darkness. Someone had turned on a lamp, and I could see their pale, panicked faces.

“Need... run...” I needed to let them know, needed to tell them to get out before they were found. “Leave now.”

“We’re not going anywhere,” Ade replied gently. There were tears on his face, and it broke my heart to see them.

I closed my eyes in frustration and took a slow breath, tensing at the pain in my ribs. I opened my eyes, looked straight at him, and tried again. “Father told the lieutenant... coming for... you. Need to go now.”

Understanding dawned on his face, and he looked at Jophiel. “Sariel is coming. He told her where we are.”

“Fuck... Wait.”

Ade frowned. “We’re not leaving her.”

Jophiel shook his head. “No, no, that’s not what I meant. Ade, Sariel can heal, and she’s so much stronger than I am. She could save her.”

I closed my eyes. No, no, that wasn’t... They needed to go or they’d be caught. Stupid angels. Stupid... Exhausted by the effort of trying to talk to them, I slipped back into the blackness that called for me.

A cool breeze passed over my face, easing some of the pain of the cuts on my skin. I opened my eyes and looked up into the night sky. At first, I thought I must have died and was floating amongst the stars in Heaven, and then I realized that couldn’t be right. After what I’d done with the angels, there would be no Heaven for me, except that one night we’d had together. I clung to that memory like it was my life raft in the dark.

“Dylan?”

I blinked and turned my head slowly to the side. Jophiel was looking at me, worry all over his handsome face. He reached out and laid his hand on my head. There was another bloom of warmth, and the fuzziness cleared a little more.

“Joph?” I murmured.

He managed a weak smile. “Hey, beautiful one. We thought we’d lost you there for a moment.”
