Page 42 of Her Dark Powers

“I haven’t,” Zayn snapped. “I’m not worried about killing the slimy fuckers.”

“Then what is it?” Jasper ran his finger down one of the pages. Although it was nearly dark, our supernatural senses certainly came in handy.

“There are about fifty of them,” Zayn replied grimly.

I blinked. “Fifty?”

Zayn nodded. “As well as Coulton and the gods. I’m thinking if he can control the gods to get them to cross borders, then he can probably get them to fight for him as well.”

Jasper tapped his finger against his lips. “Hmm... Maybe, but that would take a hell of a lot of power. I’m not sure even Coulton has that much.”

“Unless he channels some from Apophis?” I suggested. “I’ve heard of priests being able to do that before with other gods, not Apophis as such, but if they could, why couldn’t he?”

Jasper nodded slowly. “It’s possible. Then again, that would mean we could channel power from Tory too, which might be something to consider.”

“When she regains all her powers,” I said. “There’s still something blocking most of her power and abilities.”

“Back to the scary snake god priest in question,” Zayn broke in, and we looked back at him. “As I see it, he hasn’t opened the gates yet, so we can still stop him from doing it. I was hoping to just barge in and kill them all, but the odds are slightly against us.”

“Slightly?” I raised my eyebrows.

Zayn shrugged. “If West and Tory were here, I wouldn’t hesitate, but there are just the four of us...”

“Five.”

My head whipped around at the deep voice in the shadows. Jasper raised his hands, fire igniting in his palms, and Jack and Zayn were back on four paws, growling at the invader within a split second. A tall figure moved slowly towards us, holding his hands up to show he wasn’t armed. He couldn’t exactly have been hiding a concealed weapon either, as the guy was totally naked. Jasper’s fire died instantly, and he stood up and rushed over to the figure, throwing his arms round him.

“Teddy! Where the fuck have you been? You were supposed to have been at the airport.”

Teddy hugged Jasper back, then released him. “I went to see Neith to see if she had any information on where the Ennead might have been concealed within Heliopolis. I didn’t want to talk over the phone just in case. She gave me some info, and I passed it along to West on a secure channel, then I headed for the airport, but I got waylaid by some idiots whom I think may have been Golden Dawn.”

“Were they trying to take you or kill you?” Zayn asked, shifting back into human form and sighing at the scraps of his trousers scattered over the ground.

“I’m not sure,” Teddy replied. “They didn’t live long enough to tell me.” He grinned.

“How did you get here so fast?” Jack inquired. There wasn’t another direct flight for two days.

“I came on my own,” Teddy answered.

I blinked, and in a moment, the viscount vanished and a huge bird with deep blue and golden feathers strutted towards us. His piercing gold eyes flashed, and he spread powerful wings out to a wingspan of at least ten feet. A welcome breeze fanned our faces as he flapped his wings a couple of times, and then he was Teddy again. He sat down next to me and reached for the remaining energy bar.

“May I?” he asked.

I nodded, and he finished it in two bites.

“How did you find us?” Zayn queried.

“I was scanning the area from above. I went to look at how far Coulton had got and see what was going on. I spotted the two of you, but only from movement. I doubt they’d have noticed you on the ground. Those are some nice stealth skills you two have.”

Zayn went to reply but then froze. We all did as we felt the vibration moving through the earth. It wasn’t strong, the humans in the nearest city probably wouldn’t even feel it, but we did.

“Whatever we’re going to do, I suggest we decide fast,” Teddy urged.

Zayn nodded. “I don’t think any form of distraction is going to work. There are too many of them. Coulton will just send a few to investigate and continue the ritual. Jasper, Wesley, how do we circumvent this ritual, and quickly?”

I glanced at Jasper, and he nodded. “Neither of us know too much about it, but it seems like there are six priests plus the high priest who leads the ritual. It’s them we have to get to.”

Jack looked at Zayn. “Guessing they are the guys with the robes?”
