My knight on a black horse!

Elias got down from the saddle. I’d expected Luke, so seeing him strutting toward me threw me for a loop. He knelt down, his brows furrowed in concern, but he was wearing my fuzzy kitten hat and gloves.

Little bubbles of laughter escaped my lips. “Wh-why are you wearing my stuff, Daddy?”

He plucked the cute winter items from his body, placing each one on me in turn. “I figured it was the fastest way to warm them up for you.”

“I-I’m not tha-that cold,” I lied, chattering through my teeth.

“Environmental emergencies aren’t really my wheelhouse.” He helped me to my feet. “Please come home.”

Not his home. Our home. The pain in his eyes hurt my heart. I scared him deeply.

“I didn’t want any more trouble for you. Shawn will try to convince everyone that I’m happy with him or something. I won’t go back to him.”

“No, babygirl. That’s not going to happen.”

“I’m really scared. Scared enough that I broke my promise to you. How-how can you even care about me after I acted out?”

“Don’t think about it right now.” Elias hugged me tightly, and I breathed in the scent of him. I never wanted to let go. “Please trust us enough to help you.” He kissed my forehead making promises on behalf of Luke. “We love you, Emma.”

“But aren’t you and Lucas going to punish me?”

“No more questions.” Elias assisted me onto Chance. Tugging his phone out of his pocket, he sent a few texts. “Luke knows we’re on our way.” Climbing behind me, he wrapped one of his arms around my waist.

“I keep messing up and making irrational decisions, but I swear I’ll do better.” I glanced over my shoulder.

“Yes, you will. Luke and I will help you, sweetheart.”

“Thank you, Daddy. I love you.”

“I love you, Emma.”

“I mean it.”

Elias pressed his cheek to mine. “I know, sweet girl. Why else would I be out here rescuing you?”

“I think that’s the whole reason you became a doctor. To save people. You really are a knight on a horse, but you do it every day.”

“Thank you, sweetheart. I appreciate you saying it.”

Elias gestured for me to face forward, and I obeyed. He headed toward the house, and I relaxed against him. I wasn’t looking forward to the punishments that my boyfriends had in store for me, but it would clear any remaining doubts in my head. They loved me. They would protect me. That’s all I needed to know.

Emma sipped from the polka-dot mug clutched between her hands. Thankful for her safe return, I clapped Lee on the shoulder. We had all taken a nap together in my bed, warming up Emma but not discussing anything. No, I needed sleep and caffeine to engage in that conversation.

“I’m sorry, Daddies.” Emma cleared her throat. “I thought it would be better to leave so Shawn wouldn’t cause any more trouble.”

“Shawn threw a lot of accusations out. Were any of them true, darling?” I asked her gently.

“No. He’s the most manipulative person I’ve ever met. Shawn would spin a very straight-forward scenario wildly out of context for his own gain.”

“Fucking narcissist,” Elias muttered. “Were you engaged?”

“No, Daddy. At least, Shawn never asked me to marry him. I always had this picture of how I wanted it to be. A proposal I mean.” She shook her head. “Never mind. It’s not the time.”

“Tell me.”
