Or you should!

I didn’t realize you cared that much. Jealous?

Katie’s teeth clenched because their playful banter had just hit a serious nerve.

"Who are you talking to?" Ellis asked, suspicion lacing his voice.

Katie put on a blank face, but it was already too late.

"Are you talking tohim? To Landon?"

"Shhh!"

Katie reached out to grab Ellis’ arm, but his neck had already craned around to find Landon watching. Ellis ducked and brought his hand up to shield his face in an even more obvious move.

"OMG Kat, are you seriously talking to him, like right now? Are you crazy? I thought you broke it off with him?"

"I did, I did," Katie assured him, Landon’s next text only intensifying her shame.

Oh he knows?

She could only muster up a sheepish smile and a guilty shrug. She never got a chance to come up with something wittier because her phone started vibrating with a call.Ugh.Asmuch as she wanted to ignore her mother, it was already late in Idaho and even later back home, so something had to be up.

"Hi mom, I’m at work. Everything all right?" Katie asked as she stood up and gestured to Ellis that she was going to take it in the lobby.

Some muffled shuffling came through the phone.

"Mom?"

Still no answer.

Katie pushed out into the lobby where she could raise her voice. "Mom!"

The sound of a throat clearing on the other end of the line stopped her in her tracks.

"Bunny, it’s me. Please don’t hang up."

Kyle’s voice punched Katie in the gut and turned her blood ice cold. "I’m hanging up, Kyle, and I’m going to call the cops if you don’t stop harassing me."

Several people lingered in the lobby so she made her way over to the heavy metal door leading to the stairwell.

"Why won’t you even talk to me? After everything we shared, don’t I deserve that much?" Kyle asked.

The door shut behind her with a loud bang, startling a jump out of Katie that only fueled her irritation.

"I’m not doing this any more, Kyle. Do not call me. Do not text me. Do not contact me in any way shape or form. Where is my mother anyway? Why in the world do you have her phone, especially at this time of night?"

An uneasiness settled in Katie’s gut. Would he really hurt or overpower her mother to use her phone? As much as she couldn’t stand the woman, she was still her mother.

"I’m right here, honey." Angela Masterson’s voice floated over the phone.

She’d been on speaker the whole time? How psycho were these two?

"Mom, what the hell are you doing with Kyle and why would you let him call me?"

"Baby, just listen to your mother. Kyle and I have been talking these past few weeks and I know for a fact, he’s changed. He came over tonight so upset and we just don’t understand why you won’t at least talk to him and hear him out. It doesn’t make sense for you to throw away everything you two have."
