"Oh gee thanks," Katie said, but her body hurt way too much to really care what she looked like.

Craig backed Ellis up again. "I’m ready, Katie. I can handle this and he’s right, you don’t look so hot."

Katie let a shocked laugh escape, but even that small jostle pained her so much that she couldn’t muster up much of an argument. Ellis physically turned her towards the door and gave a gentle shove.

She stopped at her office to grab her things and before she left, after a last lingering grasp in her palm, she tucked away the baseball Landon had signed in the back of a drawer. It was over between them. He'd made that very clear. When she came back to work, she had to have a new mindset.

She was out of the parking garage and at the first stoplight before she realized her phone got left behind. Head heavy as a bowling ball, eyelids even heavier, she couldn’t draw together the energy to turn back.

"I’ll go in early tomorrow," she promised out loud to no one. "Super early."

Her feet stumbled up the steps to her apartment, where she did the scan—coat stand, bathroom, bed, loveseat, closet—switched on the television, then crawled under the comforter still in jeans and sweatshirt. Her body curled instinctually into the fetal position, one ear listening to the game.

"Whoa what a game so far. The Mavericks are dominating tonight folks with Landon Ryan sending a clear message to Johnny St. Pierre and the Pirates. That’s his third on base for the night, so I’d say any hang ups he has against this guy are long gone."

Katie’s lips curved up, her eyelids drooping into tiny slits through which she could see bars of sunlight streaming in around the curtains. "Rays of hope," she murmured, though she didn't know quite what she meant by it.

Then she slept.

Thud thud thud thud.

Katie’s eyes shot open and she tugged the comforter off her head. How long had she been out? Long enough that only gray light filtered around the curtain. And if it was getting dark, then she’d been asleep long enough for the second game to be over.

Thud thud thud thud.

She bolted upright, bee lined for the deadbolt her sweet, sweet Landon had installed, and nearly ripped the door off its hinges, ready to jump into his arms and kiss and cry all over him until he took her to bed and showed her how nothing else in the world mattered.

But her smile fell and the entire universe crashed down around her with it when she looked across the threshold.

"Hi Bunny. Mind if I come in?"
