"You okay, brother? Are you injured?" Stone asks, visually checking Madd over from head to toe.

"I'm fine," he grunts, pushing Stone back a step. Sighing, he drops his head and runs his hand through his hair before glancing back at the carnage less than ten feet away. Turning back to us he shakes his head, seeming to need a moment to get himself back enough to fill us in. We give him all the time he needs, knowing he'll let us when he's got his shit together a little bit.

"When I got here, place was silent. Just didn't feel right. Lights on, front door unlocked. Checked out the lobby, it was empty. Heard some muffled sounds coming from the bathroom. Chair was propped up outside of it. Opened the door, and she came flying out," he murmurs, gesturing toward the woman holding the little boy and Dolores. "She ran for the kitchen, started crying and screaming. I followed, found her holding Dolores who was already dead, sliced carotid. Front door busted open and six men stormed in. Took em' all out quickly. One of em' took a shot at the girl but missed. It hit Dolores in the head. You saw the rest."

His voice is hallow and lifeless and the sound makes my gut clench. No matter how many times we go on these jobs, it never gets any easier.

"So, you were sent on a job that was already completed by someone else, only to then be attacked by 9 of our own men. Do I have that correct?" Stone says stoically. Maddox's brows furrow as he looks at the men on the ground. I don't recognize any of them and I know that's what he's checking as well.

"How do you know they're ours?" he mumbles, looking between Stone and I.

"We took out one outside that was tailing you right before he took a bitch shot," I grunt, running a hand through my beard. "Stone checked him over, he was marked." Looking back at the pile of dead bodies, I count 6, plus the one we took out, makes 7. "Why did you say 9 men?"

Stone looks at me with a grin that is unfitting of the situation seconds before a loud explosion rocks through the room. The ground trembles but not enough for whatever that was to have been inside of this building. The woman and child both scream and Madd turns his amused stare onto Stone who is fighting to keep in a laugh.

"The Toyota?" Madd guesses. Stone shrugs nonchalantly, meanwhile, my brain has already moved on to damage control.

"We need to cover this up and get the fuck out of here. We need to come up with a cover story as soon as possible. The girl and her child will need to be taken to a safe house also." My eyes are drawn back down to the woman in question, who I can only assume is related to Dolores. Perhaps her daughter or granddaughter. Fuck, my heart breaks for them, and for Dolores. She was a good fucking woman and we had every intention of coming here to take her to a new life, a better life.

But in our world, that never fucking happens. People can't be saved when they are already in Hell.

Ella

“Holyfuck-balls!”Giannagasps.

“They have a whole ass movie theater! In their house!” Olivia screeches, making me giggle with her easy use of a swear word.

“Seriously, it’s just a fucking living room with a big tv. It’s not that big of a deal,” Hunter mumbles as he plops down onto one of the reclining theater chairs, nota couch like in a living room.

“E! This is insane! I can’t believe you’re living in this mansion and they just like, let you have friends over and shit! They aren’t even here. We could have a fucking party!” Gianna shouts.

She’s currently running around the top floor of the boy’s house like a crazy person, taking everything in and screaming excitedly every five seconds. She pauses in her current tirade and I already know what’s coming.

Ride It-Regard

“Absolutely not, Gianna! We are not throwing a fucking party in their house! Don’t even go there! They literally said I could invite you three over to keep me company while they are gone, that’s it. Nothing and no one else!” I plant my hands on my hips for added effect, forcing her to get that I’m not joking. She glares at me and stomps her foot like a petulant child.

“You’re such a boring twat, E! Hunter, you want to have a party don’t you? You’ll back me up?” she pouts her lip at my best friend, blinking rapidly. I think she’s going for cute and innocent but she looks dumb.

“Did you get something in your eye, G? Maybe a little cum leftover from your fuckbuddy?” Hunter chides, not missing a beat and knowing exactly what the little brat is trying to do.

“Ewww! You nasty asshole!” she shrieks, tossing a throw pillow at his head. He catches it, not even mildly affected. “Please, please, please Ella! I’ll be your best friend! I’ll do anything you want! Let’s just haveonemeasly little party in their massive fancy place. They won’t even know! I promise!” She turns her puppy dog eyes to me, and I swear, I waver for only a split second before her pout turns into a victorious grin.

Luckily, my phone goes off with a text, saving me from her impending meltdown when I have to break the bad news to her.

Gage: No.

Huh? My brows furrow at the random text. I wait, but nothing else comes through.

Gage, Maddox, and I have been texting all week. They’ve been away on Los Diablos business and in and out of the house since Tuesday. It’s now Friday and it’s been interesting, to say the least. If Madd or Gage isn’t home, they’ve made sure that Stone or Nyx is. When that happens, I’ve locked myself in my room. I have no interest in running into Nyx right now, nor do I have the mental capacity for his mood swings. And I honestly don’t feel comfortable enough meeting Stone by myself. I’m sure he’s a nice guy but no, just no.

Maddox and Gage went to Vegas overnight at the beginning of the week. They didn’t tell me the details of their trip and I didn’t ask, but it is odd to me that gangsters have access to things like private jets that they can use for 24-hour business trips. When they came home, Nyx and Stone left for some big thing happening in Bakersfield. Again, no questions, no information. It’s probably for the best that I’m left in the dark but I can't help my curiosity about the inner workings of gang life. I find it all so interesting and part of me feels like maybe I have something to contribute. The rest of me knows that's a stupid thought, hence, my silence on the matter.

The boys were supposed to be home with me and they had planned to movemy roomup to the second floor, where it’s safer, but they got called away for an emergency. So, I’ve been home alone. Well, notalone. Two big ass, scary-looking gang bangers named Raptor and Quan are babysitting me.

They are creepy and they stare at me in a way that makes my skin crawl. Well, Quan does. He looks at me like he'd like to kill me whereas Raptor looks at me like he wants to eat me for dinner. When I told the guys I was uncomfortable, Gage made them relocate their protection duty to the outside of the house. He then told me to invite the girls and Hunter over to keep me company until they are back home.

And here we are, in their house, hanging out and watching movies like it’s no big deal. This whole thing has been an insane whirlwind that I’m having trouble wrapping my head around. I like hanging out with the guys and I love their house. But the circumstances for my being here instead of in my own home wear on my mind constantly. I miss my house and my job. I miss Benny and volunteering. I even miss my parents. Besides the random calls and texts I share with my mom, I haven't seen her in a while, and I'm honestly surprised thattheEvelyn Hudson isn't flipping her shit.
