I move to step away from where she was attacked, but my foot kicks something, sending it skittering across the ground. I listen to the ringing coming from my phone and blindly feel around for the item. My hands wrap around a small white box I hadn’t seen before just as his voice filters through the speaker.
Bringing the item up, I squint to read the words.
“Renz?”
I thought I’d panicked before.
I thought I’d felt anger before.
I thought I’d known true terror before.
But nothing,nothing, can compare to the tornado of emotions that are now filling me at a breakneck speed. I’m going to be sick. No. That’s not right. I’m going toscream.
“Renz? Hey man, you okay?” Eli asks, his voice light…lighter than usual.
Because of her.
“Hey, you’re freaking me out man,” he chuckles humorlessly. “Did something happen? I tried to call Violet but she—”
“She’s gone.”
I don't hear what Eli says after that, because as I look down at the small box clenched in my fist, everything else in my world disappears.
